US Market Indexes Higher on Monday With Gains From Tech Stocks

Apple and the Nasdaq Composite report new closing highs

U.S. market indexes were higher Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,813.69 for a gain of 178.48 points or 0.72%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,746.87 for a gain of 12.25 points or 0.45%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,606.46 for a gain of 52.13 points or 0.69%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.73 for a loss of -0.73 points or -5.42%.

Monday’s market movers

The technology sector helped U.S. market indexes to gain Monday. Positive insights around Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference fueled valuations in the sector. Apple (AAPL, Financial) itself gained 0.84%, reporting a record closing high of $191.83 on Monday. The Nasdaq Composite also reported a record closing high with a gain of 0.69% on Monday.

Factory orders was the only major report on the economic calendar Monday. Factory orders reported a -0.8% monthly increase following a 1.7% increase in the prior month.

The Treasury also held auctions for three-month and six-month Treasury bills at the following rates:

  • Three-Month Treasury Bill: 1.910%
  • Six-Month Treasury Bill: 2.070%

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,653.37 for a gain of 5.39 points or 0.33%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,025.08 for a gain of 9.51 points or 0.94%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,224.70 for a gain of 30.59 points or 0.30%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,445.20 for a gain of 54.09 points or 0.52%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,968.20 for a gain of 9.87 points or 0.50%; the S&P 100 at 1,207.65 for a gain of 5.64 points or 0.47%; the Russell 3000 at 1,634.99 for a gain of 7.60 points or 0.47%; the Russell 1000 at 1,525.38 for a gain of 7.27 points or 0.48%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 697.25 for a gain of 0.70 points or 0.10%.
