US Market Indexes Start the Week Higher on Monday

S&P 500 closes at 2782.00 with a gain of 0.11%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25322.31 on Monday with a gain of 5.78 points or 0.02%. The S&P 500 closed at 2782.00 for a gain of 2.97 points or 0.11%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7659.93 for a gain of 14.41 points or 0.19%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 12.44 with a gain of 0.26 points or 2.13%.

Monday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes were higher Monday as investors showed a positive outlook for upcoming global events. President Trump’s summit with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un has investors optimistic about denuclearization. Meanwhile, the Fed is scheduled to begin its June monetary policy meeting on Wednesday and the European Central Bank will meet to discuss monetary policy on Thursday.

Sectors leading gains on Monday included consumer staples and energy. The S&P 500 consumer staples sector gained 0.83%. The S&P 500 energy sector gained 0.52% with help from Sempra Energy (SRE, Financial) which gained 13% after activist investor Elliott Management released a strategy report to improve shareholder value.

There were no market moving reports on the economic calendar Monday. However, the Treasury did hold auctions for three-month, six-month, three-year and ten-year notes at the following rates:

3-Month 1.910%

6-Month 2.075%

3-Year 2.664%

10-Year 2.962%

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Chevron (CVX, Financial) 0.89%

Home Depot (HD, Financial) 0.66%

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1674.68 for a gain of 2.19 points or 0.13%. The S&P 600 closed at 1041.08 for a gain of 2.47 points or 0.24%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10392.09 for a gain of 18.15 points or 0.17%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10551.46 for a loss of -5.72 points or -0.05%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 2000.90 for a gain of 0.23 points or 0.01%; the S&P 100 at 1222.43 for a gain of 0.64 points or 0.05%; the Russell 3000 at 1656.43 for a gain of 1.68 points or 0.10%; the Russell 1000 at 1545.41 for a gain of 1.53 points or 0.10%; and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 702.80 for a gain of 0.96 points or 0.14%.
