US Market Indexes Close Lower After Trade Reports

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,090.48 on Friday with a loss of -84.83 points or -0.34%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,779.42 for a loss of -3.07 points or -0.11%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,746.38 for a loss of -14.66 points or -0.19%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 11.98 for a loss of -0.14 points or -1.16%.

For the week, the S&P 500 was down -0.1%, the Dow Jones was down -1.0% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.2%.

Year to date, the S&P 500 is now up 5.33%, the Dow Jones has gained 2.71% and the Nasdaq Composite has a return of 12.70%.

Friday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes were lower Friday following trade reports from both the U.S. and China on new international tariffs. The Trump administration announced it would require a tax of 25% on $50 billion worth of industrial technology goods from China. In response, a report from China said it would require a tax of 25% on $50 billion worth of U.S. agriculture and automotive goods.

Sectors reporting the greatest losses for the day included energy and materials. The S&P 500 energy sector was down -2.20% with OPEC reporting a potential increase in production and energy products on the second round list for additional tariffs from China.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Industrial production reported a monthly decrease of -0.1%.
  • The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index increased to 99.3 from 98.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,683.91 for a loss of -0.82 points or -0.05%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,039.54 for a gain of 0.45 points or 0.04%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,451.73 for a loss of -18.04 points or -0.17%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,470.51 for a loss of -18.33 points or -0.17%.
