Writers Compensation Program - Writers Wanted

September 21, 2009
10qk

In order to encourage value investors to share their investment ideas and research on GuruFocus.com with their value peers, GuruFocus is looking for writers to participate in our new Writer Compensation Program.

What will you do?

1. Write articles about value investing strategies and research, e.g., Making the Fluctuations Pay

2. Write an in-depth analysis of a company.

3. Write about specific positions in Gurus’ portfolios, e.g. Valuating Berkshire Hathaway Holdings: General Electric Company (GE)

4. Write notes and key points of Gurus video interviews, shareholder letters, book reviews, etc., e.g., Warren Buffett MBA Talk at University of Florida.

5. Respond to users' comments to your articles in all of the above.

How will you be compensated?

Updated on Jan. 23, 2012

How to get paid more per article? The best way to get paid more per article is to write good articles. GuruFocus appreciates deep analysis of companies. Writing quick idea articles without analysis does not add value to readers, and those articles will not be paid much.

If you are a US resident, please download W9 form. Fill, sign, scan and email to gurufocus AT gurufocus.com. If you are not a US resident, please download W8 form. Fill, sign, scan and email to gurufocus AT gurufocus.com.

We will not be able to make payments without these IRS required tax documents.

Updated on Jan. 11, 2011

The payment comes from two sources.

1. We will pay a fixed amount (starting at $10 per article, up to $100 per article). This payment may go up as you write longer and more, and most importantly good articles for GuruFocus.

2. You will be compensated with the advertising revenues of your articles’ pageviews. We use Google Adsense for the top horizontal banner (728x90).

If you have a Google Adsense account, your Google Adsense ads will be placed for 100% of the pageviews of your articles. You will be paid by Google directly and GuruFocus will not issue payment directly to you or handle any of your payment paperwork.

3. We do have authors who use others ads instead of Google Adsense. It is fine with us as long as they are investing-related, and they are of the same sizes.

Why would you want to participate in the Writer Compensation Program?

1. You love to write, and you want to share.

2. Instead of writing on an isolated blog somewhere on the Internet, you can gain immediate exposure of your thoughts and research work to the more than 25,000 visitors a day.

3. Your articles will be syndicated by Google News, Google Finance, Yahoo News, AOL Finance, etc. Your articles will be exposed to the users on those sites and gain immediate attention.

4. Build reputation on the Internet and in the value investing world.

5. Generate a constant meaningful amount of cashflow for yourself. The more you write, the more money you will make. The better you write, the more money you will make.

6. If you have a website you want to promote, a link will be posted on your article pages which will link to your site.

Requirements

1. All articles submitted to GuruFocus are exclusive to GuruFocus and your site only. Any other publications of these articles require the written permission of GuruFocus.com. The fixed payment applies if the articles are published on GuruFocus only.

2. Your articles will not infringe the intellectual property rights, privacy, rights to publicity or any other legal or moral rights of any third party.

3. All submissions and publications are subject to GuruFocus Editorial guidelines, and GuruFocus may edit, modify, or remove these articles before or after publications.

4. Since you are paid by Google Adsense program, you agree to Google AdSenseTM Online Standard Terms and Conditions and Google AdSense Programme Policies.

Interested candidates please submit your articles. Please indicate your interest and send us a short bio of yourself (include a link to your website if you want to), your Google AdSense code for 728x90 ads, and your picture to GuruFocus@GuruFocus.com.

We pay monthly, on the first business day of each month. We pay through check or PayPal.

If you have not done so, a Freelance Agreement needs to be signed, scanned and emailed to gurufocus (AT) gurufocus.com. You can download it here.

Some Questions and Answers:

What is the qualification requirement?

We don't require that you hold a degree in investing related areas. We don't require that you work in related areas either. Your articles will prove if you are qualified or otherwise. Submit Articles. They will tell us if you are qualified or not.

Can I write under a pseudonym?

It is your choice to write under your real name or a pseudonym. Writing under a real name will help you build reputation. But if that is not a concern for you, you can certainly write under a pseudonym.

How much money can I make by writing?

It depends on the topics you write, and the quality of your writings and the number of articles you write. If you write regularly for more than 20 articles a month, we believe you can potentially make more than $1000 a month as your articles accumulate.

Google AdSense does have fluctuations in pay for click, which affects your earnings too. But these days the pay per click is above historical average, and it is in up trend.

How does the Google Adsense part work?

You need to have a Google Adsense Account to make money. If you don't have Google Adsense Account, you can create one by going to Google Adsense and apply for an account. After you a approved (in 2-3 days), please generate two Adsense Codes, one is 728x90, the other is 160x600, and email them to GuruFocus@GuruFocus.com.

When is the payment made to writers?

We pay monthly, on the first business day of each month. We pay through check or PayPal.

If you have not done so, a Freelance Agreement needs to be signed, scanned and emailed to gurufocus (AT) gurufocus.com. You can download it here.

More Q&As

Can I get a complimentary Premium Membership once I start writing?

You will get a complimentary Premium Membership once you reach the silver level, which is actually quite easy to do. You just need to submit 10 articles.

When I write about a stock, do I have to disclose my positions with the stock?

Yes, full disclosure is required.

How do I create the Adsense Code?

To create the code, login your Adsense account, go to:

Adsense Setup -> Adsense for Content -> Select Ad Unit and Continue -> Select Ad format (e.g. 728x90) -> get code.

We need to two ads format, one is 728x90, the other is 160x600.

Use image ads is sometimes better than text, but not always.

Can I write about asset allocation and advice for beginners with a value approach? For example can i write how a novice investor should invest through mutual funds( mostly index) with value approaches instead of writting about stocks?

I plan to also write about individual stocks for more advanced investors, I just have a good article about asset allocation that I would like to post as my first writing? Is that an acceptable topic
gurufocus
Gurufocus premium member - 4 years ago
Yes, you can. There is no limitation on topics as long as the articles meet the editorial guidelines.

I was trying to sent an article today. I could paste all the text but could not copy and paste tables in excel. I had initially pasted the xls table as a picture in the word document. So when I tried copying the article, the text copied over and I am not sure how to get the tables in. Thank-you for clarifying.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.....

1) Register at google.com/adsense - this will take a few days to complete.

Under "adsense for content"...

2) Create two advertisement "blocks" one should be 160x60 pixels the other should be 728x90.

For each "block" Google generates about 10 lines of javascript code. So, you get two snippets of javascript. Not to worry, you can view those snippets at any time.

3) Send these snippets, a picture and a short profile to gurufocus by mail or PM. Gurufocus will embed this in your future articles.

The code snippets are important. They link your gurufocus articles to your google account and "count" the pageviews. You are paid by Google directly. Google typically buys me a beer for each article I submit on gurufocus but I'm probably the least productive writer here. Writing more often does help.

If generating your own code is too much trouble, I'll be happy to send you mine. Your articles will then generate earnings for me ;-)

Is it necessary to participate in the compensation program in order to submit articles. My client, a hedge fund manager, is more interested in sharing their investment philosophies, than receiving adSense compensation. Or is there a different program for fund managers to submit content?

Please let me know.

thanks!

When I put together research and analysis for external consumption, I make good use of charts/graphs, tables, pictures, etc. to make it as easy as possible for the reader to get the key points quickly. Then, if there's an interest in a particular area of the report (e.g., risks, valuation, competitive position), they can read more of the details.

Since: 1) I believe people like to look at pictures and to read well-formatted text(provided there's solid research and analysis behind it); 2) Formatting and graphs make more compelling, easier to understand recommendations and conclusions; and 3) Most importantly, if I'm going to put my name on something, I want it to reflect the quality of my work, this is important to me.

I know an earlier post touched on this already, but please let me know if this makes any sense:

  1. Sign up for Google Adsense, wait couple days, get account.
  2. Get HTML code from Adsense with your ID in it, as BatBeer2 explains - or ask for his, if you're feeling generous ;)
  3. Put together report using, in my case, Word 2007, properly formatted with all charts, pictures, etc. embedded
  4. Use Save As in format easiest for GuruFocus to work with (single file web page, webpage, etc)
  5. E-mail the Word file and the graphics as jpg files as well, if necessary.
  6. Also include a picture, brief bio, and link to website if desirable.

Just would like to get everything straight before preparing an article for submission, particularly if it's a time-sensitive piece that I'd like to get out quickly.

Many thanks.

Does one HAVE to participate in the google adsense program?

If not, then how does GF know that buy posting an article, said poster wants to be compensated for posting the article? Does there need to be an email dialogue letting GF know that the author would like to be compensated for their work?

Also, does one have to have posted 5 articles before being compensated with the fixed payments?

Thanks very much,

Rob: You don't have to participate in Adsense. However, it only takes a few minutes to setup. During the process Google generates a snippet of HTML code. You email this code, or PM it, to GF and they'll post it along with any articles you write. Pretty easy and it's been working great for me.

Ok I wrote an article, and sent you all te details by mail.

I still have a question regarding a post above:

You will get a complimentary Premium Membership once you reach the silver level, which is actually quite easy to do. You just need to submit 10 articles.

Does this still apply? Does it mean I can have access to the value contest reports to read them without paying ?

Hi, Came across your site...very interesting indeed.

I would like to know if brief articles that rate stocks in a style that has are used by a number of portfolio managers would qualify as a article of interest in your program. That is, the report does not focus on the traditional analysis of fundamentals (nor does it look at traditional technical analysis), but uses a fund flow cycle analysis model that creates constituent/stock ratings to help fund managers with timely add/reduce/adjust decisions.

Thus the report would only indicate a chart with brief commentary, but more importantly rating decisions via proxys that detect relative supply vs demand shifts. While a good number of funds , including those you track, use similar models for over 30 years, the model or others similar cannot predict specific longer-term price targets, but can squeeze out extra basis points by determining more optimal points of entries/exits/adjustments by understanding the nature of the underlying demand by looking at proxys for fund flows into the instrument.

So the questions I have are :

- Do you think this type of report adjusted for retail would be of interest to your readers ?

- Given the strength is based on the model, the report itself may 'look' simple, but the model

isn't; thus, does this conform to your editorial rules for quality research ?)

- Given the focus is on ratings for individual stocks/instruments, components of the report may be re-used in either private or public publications…is that ok? Eg. given that most funds like Apple, if we do a fund flow analysis on Apple, does this mean we can’t do it again for Apple ever again whether public or private ?

Sorry for such a long note, we are currently considering developing such reports for retail consumption and your input would be valued.

Thanks for you input.

All the best
