US Market Indexes Close Lower on Friday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,058.12 on Friday with a loss of -6.38 points or -0.03%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,801.83 for a loss of -2.66 points or -0.09%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,820.20 for a loss of -5.10 points or -0.07%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.86 for a loss of -0.01 points or -0.08%.

For the week, the S&P 500 was down -0.1%, the Dow Jones gained 0.2% and the Nasdaq Composite decreased -0.1%.

Year to date, the Dow Jones is up 2.5%, the S&P 500 is up 5.82% and the Nasdaq Composite is up 13.80%.

Friday’s market movers

Trade concerns overshadowed more positive earnings results on Friday, pushing U.S. market indexes lower. Sectors leading losses for the day included consumer discretionary, utilities and real estate.

The Baker Hughes North American rig count was the only major report on the economic calendar Friday. The rig count increased to 1,257 from 1,251.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,696.81 for a loss of -4.50 points or -0.26%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,055.99 for a loss of -2.98 points or -0.28%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,523.42 for a loss of -49.18 points or -0.47%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,532.21 for a loss of -14.11 points or -0.13%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,998.36 for a loss of -10.69 points or -0.53%; the S&P 100 at 1,236.33 for a gain of 0.35 points or 0.03%; the Russell 3000 at 1,668.44 for a loss of -2.35 points or -0.14%; the Russell 1000 at 1,555.80 for a loss of -2.03 points or -0.13%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 703.81 for a loss of -4.30 points or -0.61%.
