US Market Indexes Close With Losses on Friday

Nasdaq Composite leads returns for the week with a gain of 0.4%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,313.14 on Friday with a loss of -196.09 points or -0.77%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,833.28 for a loss of -20.30 points or -0.71%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,839.11 for a loss of -52.67 points or -0.67%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 13.20 for a gain of 1.93 points or 17.13%.

For the week, the Dow Jones reported a loss of 0.6%, the S&P 500 reported a loss of 0.3% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.4%.

Year to date, the Dow Jones has a gain of 4.29%, the S&P 500 has gained 7.73% and the Nasdaq Composite has a return of 14.74%.

Friday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes saw a decline in Treasury yields Friday as concerns over Turkey’s currency caused increased buying of open market Treasuries. Financials reported some of the day’s greatest losses with the S&P 500’s financial sector down -1.10%.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Consumer Price Index reported an annual increase of 2.9%.
  • The Baker Hughes North American rig count decreased to 1,266 from 1,267.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,474.34 for a loss of -18.84 points or -0.18%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,541.31 for a loss of -48.08 points or -0.45%.
