The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,162.41 on Wednesday with a loss of -137.51 points or -0.54%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,818.37 for a loss of -21.59 points or -0.76%. The Nasdaq Composite was lower at 7,774.12 for a loss of -96.78 points or -1.23%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 14.81 for a gain of 1.50 points or 11.27%.
Wednesday’s market movers
U.S. market indexes saw continued pressure from emerging markets as Turkey’s currency continued to be a concern and the country reported it would be increasing its U.S. import tariffs on several categories of goods. Oil prices were also lower Wednesday, causing losses in energy stocks. In the S&P 500, the energy sector led losses with a return of -3.49%. Nearly all other sectors were lower for the day except for consumer staples, real estate and utilities.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The Mortgage Bankers Association’s mortgage applications index was down -2.0% for the week.
- Retails sales increased 0.5%.
- Nonfarm productivity reported a 2.9% seasonally annualized average rate.
- Industrial production increased 0.1% for the month.
- Business inventories increased 0.1%.
- The National Association of Home Builders’ Housing Market Index decreased to 67.
- The EIA Petroleum Status reported a 6.8 million barrel increase in oil inventory for the week.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,367.52 for a loss of -134.22 points or -1.28%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,487.07 for a loss of -105.92 points or -1.00%.
