US Market Indexes Close Lower on Thursday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,338.84 on Thursday with a loss of -27.59 points or -0.11%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,737.80 for a loss of -5.99 points or -0.22%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,273.08 for a loss of -18.51 points or -0.25%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 18.95 for a gain of 0.46 points or 2.49%.

Thursday’s market movers

Stocks closed lower Thursday after a three-day rally with investors concerned about the approaching trade negotiation meeting between the U.S. and China on Saturday. In the S&P 500, technology and financials led losses.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Jobless claims increased to 234,000 from 224,000.
  • The PCE Price Index reported an increase of 0.2% in October and an annual increase of 2%. In October, personal income increased 0.5% and personal spending increased 0.6%.
  • Pending home sales decreased 2.6% in October and decreased 6.7% annually.
  • The Federal Reserve released its November Federal Open Market Committee minutes, echoing Powell’s comments earlier this week that policy may be near neutral.
  • The Freddie Mac weekly mortgage market survey showed mortgage rates mostly unchanged. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 4.81% with no change from the previous week. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 4.25%, increasing one basis point from the previous week.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,525.39 for a loss of 5.00 points or -0.33%. The S&P 600 closed at 956.63 for a loss of 4.48 points or -0.47%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,492.36 for a loss of 26.23 points or -0.28%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,672.60 for a loss of 15.88 points or -0.16%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,866.74 for a loss of 2.22 points or -0.12%; the S&P 100 at 1,213.70 for a loss of 2.39 points or -0.20%; the Russell 3000 at 1,613.15 for a loss of 3.44 points or -0.21%; the Russell 1000 at 1,513.18 for a loss of 3.09 points or -0.20%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,234.28 for a loss of 58.82 points or -0.21%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 692.37 for a loss of 0.57 points or -0.08%.
