Bill Gates' s Profile & Performance

Profile

Bill Gates is one of the smartest businessmen in the world. He founded Microsoft and grew it to the world's largest software maker and monopolized the PC world. Bill Gates was the richest man for 15 consecutive years.

Warren Buffett once said that Bill Gates can do what he does and he cannot do what Bill Gates does. Bill Gates now sits on the board of Berkshire Hathaway, and owns a few percent of Berkshire shares. The portfolio we track here before June 2009 is called Cascade Investment, which is the personal portfolio of Bill Gates. The portfolio is managed by Michael Larson

Edit: Since June 2009, the portfolio we track is for Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust. It is still managed by Michael Larson

Microsoft Just Pulled Another 'Microsoft' with Its Purchase of Skype
When I wake up in the morning and check news for the companies I own, I worry. I don't worry that my companies missed their quarterly guidance by a few pennies – running a business is an art, and things don't usually work out in a precise, linear fashion. The companies that have a "deliver the quarter" culture often just play their financial statements as a musical instrument. No, I am not worried about that. What worries me is that a company in my portfolio will pull a "Microsoft" (MSFT) – announce a stupendous, "transformative" acquisition, like the $48 billion takeover of Yahoo! (YHOO) that Microsoft announced in 2008, but that Yahoo!'s management was too ... (fill in the blank) to accept. (I spent some time looking at Yahoo! last week. Its stock is at $18, almost half the price that Microsoft offered, and I find the company only mildly undervalued if you give a significant value to the assets alibaba.com and Alibaba Group that Yahoo! acquired in 2006 and which were not worth nearly as much in 2008.) What’s Important? (Please See the Footnotes)
Haven’t you ever wanted to know whether Warren Buffett shops at Walmart (WMT) and Dollar General (DG) or whether he uses Geico insurance? I know a great new product is coming to the market, but has Bill Gates been using an iPhone? Does Michael Dell use Dell (DELL) products? Does Exxon (XOM) CEO Rex Tillerson wear a ski mask if he’s low on gas and has to pull into a Shell (RDS.A) oil gas station? Does anyone in the Walton family actually shop at Walmart? Do they ever go into a Whole Foods (WFM) or Kroger (KR)? These questions, as slightly humorous as they may be, may actually be more important to know than some of the nonsense that gets delivered to us through Wall Street. Read more...
Stocks That Buffett and Gates Own: The CocaCola Company, Wal-Mart Stores, Costco Wholesale Corp. Exxon Mobil Corp., M&T Bank Corp., Republic Services Stocks That Buffett and Gates Own
There are people who believe they can beat the market by trading in and out of the market. They could not appreciate, nor could they be taught the beauty and simplicity of buying a good business managed by a good management and sold at a reasonable price, and holding them for a long time. The performance will take care of itself if one does that. Too often we see people recommending buying this and selling that because there is a 20% gain or loss. I usually found report like that skeptical and I am curious how successful the recommender is in managing their own money. Is he or she more successful than Warren Buffett? Read more...

Tocqueville Asset Management – A Letter To Chinese Little Emperor
I recently published a “Letter to My Grandson” which, by our readership standards, was a huge success with the parents and grandparents of “twenty-somethings.” However, it elicited no response from young readers, which prompted my friendly editor Carey Horwitz to suggest that I should break that letter into small pieces and broadcast it as thirty separate “tweets.” More...

Bill Gates - The Rolling Stone Interview
At 58, Bill Gates (Trades, Portfolio) is not only the richest man in the world, with a fortune that now exceeds $76 billion, but he may also be the most optimistic. In his view, the world is a giant operating system that just needs to be debugged. Gates' driving idea – the idea that animates his life, that guides his philanthropy, that keeps him late in his sleek book-lined office overlooking Lake Washington, outside Seattle – is the hacker's notion that the code for these problems can be rewritten, that errors can be fixed, that huge systems – whether it's Windows 8, global poverty or climate change – can be improved if you have the right tools and the right skills. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the philanthropic organization with a $36 billion endowment that he runs with his wife, is like a giant startup whose target market is human civilization. is DEERE maybe missing?
on the Deere IR website, Cascade investements LLC (Bill Gates (Trades, Portfolio) holding) is the main shareholder with 8% of shares, valueing that stake at around 2,5 billion.
That would make it second behind Berkshire on the list...

It is true that Gates isn't buying Berkshire. But his other holdings are interesting.

I question the value of tracking this fund. Gates isn't buying Berkshire, Buffett is gifting Berkshire shares to the Gates foundation.
