GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Baron Energy and Resources Fund Comments on Barrick Gold Corp - Nov 21, 2016

Shares of gold mining company Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:ABX) fell during the third quarter in concert with a decline in gold prices. Gold prices surged following the Brexit vote in late June. As equity markets recovered, concerns over Brexit eased, and concerns regarding less accommodative monetary policies rose, gold and gold equities weakened. We believe it is prudent to maintain a modest exposure to gold at this time. We think the shares are attractively valued based on our outlook for gold pricing, Barrick’s growing gold volumes, and falling cost structure.

John Rogers Comments on Barrick Gold Corp - Aug 18, 2016

Some of our holdings performed well during the quarter. Gold miner Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE:ABX) jumped +57.40% as the price of gold continued to rise. Specifically, gold rose from approximately $1,220 to $1,320 over the course of the quarter. The jump proved big for gold miners as their product jumped in price but their costs remained stable. Barrick remains the biggest and, we think, the best gold miner.

GoodHaven Funds Comments on Barrick Gold Guru stock highlight
The Fund’s second largest investment, Barrick Gold (NYSE:ABX), was similar in a number of ways to our previously successful investment in pre-split Hewlett-Packard (HP) where a low-cost producer and asset rich company generating significant cash flows became over-leveraged after overpaying for a large acquisition and borrowing to finance the deal. HP overpaid for a software company and Barrick for a copper miner. In both cases, the fall-out from bad deal-making resulted in major governance changes, with new management teams and significant board turnover.

In the case of Barrick, we became aggressive buyers due to several factors: new management and governance was focused on rapidly improving the balance sheet and per share free cash flow as primary objectives; the company’s low cost operations appear to have opportunities to drive costs even lower; there were non-core assets that could be used to reduce and restructure borrowings; per share cash flows could easily justify a much higher price; gold prices were far off the highs of just a few years earlier; and central bank reserves had exploded since Read more...
