Accelrys, Inc. was incorporated in Delaware in 1993. The Company develops and commercializes scientific business intelligence software and solutions that enable its customers to accelerate the discovery and development of new drugs and materials. The Company's customers include pharmaceutical, biotechnology and other life science companies, as well as companies that are in the energy, chemicals, aerospace and consumer packaged goods markets. The Company's software and service solutions are used by its customers' scientists, biologists, chemists and information technology professionals in order to aggregate, mine, integrate, analyze, simulate, manage and interactively report scientific data. Its customer base consists of companies that differentiate themselves from the competition on the basis of scientific innovation. These customers include commercial, governmental and academic organizations, including many of the world's largest pharmaceutical, biotechnology, energy, chemicals, aerospace, consumer packaged goods and industrial products companies. The Company sells its products and services through its direct sales force, telesales and, in some markets, arrangements with distributors. Its electronic software distribution program allows its customers to download its products over the Internet. The competition for its enterprise platform includes customers' own proprietary software, open source software such as Knime, and workflow and data-pipeline applications of smaller commercial software vendors such as IDBS.
