Advent Software, Inc. (ADVS), the provider of critical back-office software to the investment management business, rose 25.3% in the quarter. Earnings showed significant improvement both in sales and margins. The company announced that in conclusion of its evaluation of strategic alternatives, it would pursue a leveraged recap and pay out a $9/per share special dividend. A result with which we are happy.

Advent Software, Inc. was founded and incorporated in 1983 in California and reincorporated in Delaware in November 1995. It offers software and services that automate work flows and data across investment management organizations, as well as the information flows between an investment management organization and external parties. Its products are intended to increase operational efficiency, improve the accuracy of client information and enable better decision-making. Each solution focuses on specific mission-critical functions of the investment management organization and is tailored to meet the needs of the particular client, as determined by size, assets under management and complexity of the investment environment. In October 2008, its Advent Investment Management segment acquired Tamale Software, Inc., a provider of research management software which helps investment professionals manage their workflow and research process. The Company's core clients are investment management institutions that manage, advice, and perform recordkeeping functions on financial assets. Examples of these institutions include global and US-based asset managers, registered investment advisors, prime brokers, fund administrators, hedge funds, family offices and banks and trusts. The Company licenses and sells Advent products and services through five sales groups, which are organized by product and customer type. The sales groups are: Global Accounts, Investment Management Group, Straight through Processing (STP), Tamale, and Grantmaking, Community and Non-profit Organizations.
