Athens Bancshares Corporation was incorporated in September 2009. It is a holding company for Athens Federal Community Bank. It offers financial services to consumers and businesses by accepting deposits from the general public and use those funds to lend residential mortgage loans and to a lesser extent, non-residential real estate loans, construction loans, land and land development loans, multi-family real estate loans, consumer loans and commercial business loans. Its primary market area is McMinn, Monroe and Bradley Counties, Tennessee. The Company's residential mortgage loans enables borrowers to purchase or refinance existing homes located in its market area. It offers fixed- and adjustable-rate mortgage loans secured by non-residential real estate. Its fixed-rate non-residential real estate loans, generally with terms of three to five years and payments based on an amortization schedule of up to 30 years. The Company provides construction loans for one-to four-family homes and to a much lesser extent, commercial properties, such as retail shops and office units, and multi-family properties. The Company offers loans to individuals and developers for the purpose of developing vacant land in its market area. The Company also offers a variety of consumer loans, including home equity loans and lines of credit, automobile loans and loans secured by deposits. Through the its operating subsidiary, Southland Finance, Inc., company also offers consumer finance loans secured by used automobiles, televisions and various other personal property to borrowers with historically lower credit scores. It also typically provides commercial business loans to small businesses located in its market area. The Company's accepts deposits from the market area through the offering of deposit instruments, including non-interest-bearing demand deposits, interest-bearing demand accounts, regular savings accounts and certificates of deposit. Its faces competition for loans which, comes primarily from financial institutions, including credit unions, other financial service providers, such as mortgage companies and mortgage brokers. Competition for loans also comes from non-depository financial service companies entering the mortgage market, such as insurance companies, securities companies and specialty finance companies. The bank is subject to regulation, examination and supervision by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, as its federal regulator, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, as the deposit insurer.
