AMSC was founded in April, 1987. It is a Delaware Corporation. The Company is a provider of megawatt-scale solutions. In the wind power market, it enables manufacturers to field wind turbines through its engineering, support services and power electronics products. In the power grid market, it enables electric utilities and renewable energy project developers to connect, transmit and distribute power through its transmission planning services and power electronics and superconductor-based products. Its wind and power grid products and services provide exceptional reliability, security, efficiency and affordability to its customers. The Company segments its operations into two market-facing business units namely Wind and Grid. Through its Windtec Solutions brand, its Wind segment enables manufacturers to field wind turbines with exceptional power output, reliability and affordability. It licenses its engineered wind turbine designs, provide extensive customer support services and supply advanced power electronics and control systems to wind turbine manufacturers. Its design portfolio includes various drive trains and power ratings up to 10 megawatts. These designs and support services sells its power electronics and software-based control systems, which are designed for optimized performance, efficiency and grid compatibility. Through its Gridtec Solutions brand, its Grid segment enables electric utilities and renewable energy project developers to connect, transmit and distribute power with exceptional efficiency, reliability and affordability. It provide transmission planning services that allow it to identify power grid congestion, poor power quality and other risks, which help it determine how its solutions can improve network performance. These services sell grid interconnection solutions for wind farms and solar power plants, power quality systems and transmission and distribution cable systems. The Company faces competition for the supply of wind turbine engineering design services from design engineering firms such as GL Garrad Hassan, and from licensors of wind turbine systems such as Aerodyn, AventisEnergy and Fuhrlander. It faces competition from companies offering power electronic converters for use in applications for which it expect to sell its PowerModule products. These companies include ABB, Semikron, Vacon and Xantrex. It faces competition from companies offering various types of wind turbine electrical system components, which include ABB, Converteam, Guotong Electric, Ingeteam, Mita-Teknik, Woodward and Xantrex. It also faces indirect competition in the wind energy market from global manufacturers of wind energy systems, such as Gamesa, General Electric, Suzlon and Vestas.
