Guru Investment Theses on Angie's List Inc

Baron Funds Comments on Angie's List Inc. - Nov 21, 2013

Angie's List, Inc. (ANGI) helps connect consumers with local service professionals. It has over two million paying members across the states who share their consumer experiences and use Angie's List to gain access to ratings, exclusive discounts and information about service providers. The company generates the majority of its revenues and profits from advertising and lead generation by service providers who wish to do business with the interested network of paying subscribers. Growth in subscribers and revenues is accelerating, and the company just became cash flow positive. We are intrigued by the company's ecommerce/marketplace initiative, in which the company will actually facilitate communications and transactions between members and service providers. We think this transition in its business model should make the entity much more valuable. We are carefully watching the execution of this transition because it is just in its inception.

Traded in other countries:8AL.Germany
Angie's List, Inc. is a Delaware Corporation. The Company operates a consumer-driven solution for its members to research, hire, rate and review local professionals for critical needs, such as home, health care and automotive services. The Company's ratings and reviews, which are available only to its members, help its members to find the best provider for their local service needs. It generates revenue from both its members and its service providers. It derives membership revenue from subscription fees and, in certain cases, non-refundable initiation fees for monthly, annual and multi-year memberships. These fees typically are charged in advance and recognized ratably over the subscription period and the expected life of the membership, respectively. It also helps local service providers find quality customers and differentiate themselves in a competitive marketplace. The Company's members represent an attractive, targeted group of consumers for service providers. The Company's typical member is between the ages of 35 and 64, is married, owns a home, is college educated and has an annual household income of at least $100,000, based on information derived and interpreted by it as a result of its own analysis from general demographic data provided by Nielsen. The Company's value proposition to local service providers is evidenced by the high retention rate of service providers who participate in service provider promotions. The Company's members submit more than 40,000 reviews each month on their real-life experiences with local service providers in more than 550 categories of home remodeling, plumbing, roof repair, health care, automobile repair and other services. The Company's members rate local service providers on an "A" through "F" grading scale based on six criteria: overall experience, price, quality, responsiveness, punctuality and professionalism. In addition to a letter grade, it encourages members to provide a detailed description and commentary on the service experience.
