1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

ASB Bancorp, Inc., a North Carolina corporation was incorporated in May 2011 to be Asheville Savings Bank, S.S.B's holding company upon completion of the Bank's conversion from the mutual to stock form of organization. Asheville Savings Bank operates as a community-oriented financial institution, with approximately 13 full-service offices in its primary market area, which encompasses Buncombe, Madison, McDowell, Henderson and Transylvania Counties in North Carolina and the surrounding areas. The Bank offers a variety of deposit products and provides residential and commercial real estate loans. The largest component of our loan portfolio is real estate mortgage loans, primarily one- to four-family residential mortgage loans and commercial mortgage loans, and to a lesser extent, revolving mortgage loans which consist of home equity loans and lines of credit, consumer loans, construction and land development loans, and commercial and industrial loans. It originates loans for investment purposes and sells fixed-rate residential mortgage loans into secondary market. The Bank's commercial loans are centrally underwritten based primarily on the customer's ability to generate the required cash flow to service the debt in accordance with the contractual terms and conditions of the loan agreement. The Company does not own or lease any real property, but instead uses the premises, equipment and other property of the Bank, with the payment of appropriate rental fees, as required by applicable laws and regulations, under the terms of an expense allocation agreement entered into with the Bank.
