GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Atlantic Power Corp operates a fleet of power generation assets in the United States and Canada. Its power generation projects sell electricity to utilities and commercial customers.

Atlantic Power Corp is a corporation established under the laws of the Province of Ontario, Canada on June 18, 2004 and continued to the Province of British Columbia on July 8, 2005. The Company is a publicly traded, power generation and infrastructure company with a portfolio of assets in the United States and Canada. Its power generation projects sell electricity to utilities and other large commercial customers largely under long-term power purchase agreements. Its current projects include: Cadillac, Calstock, Curtis Palmer, Kapuskasing, Kenilworth, Mamquam, Manchief, Meadow Creek, Moresby Lake, Morris among others. The Company directly operates and maintains the majority of its power generation projects. Its portfolio is diversified in terms of electricity and steam buyers, fuel type, regulatory jurisdictions and regional power pools, thereby partially mitigating exposure to market, regulatory or environmental conditions specific to any single region. The Company has four reportable segments: East, West, Wind and Un-allocated Corporate. It partners with recognized leaders in the independent power industry to operate and maintain other projects, including Colorado Energy Management and Power Plant Management Services. Under these operation, maintenance and management agreements, the operator is typically responsible for operations, maintenance and repair services. The Company competes with utilities, industrial companies and other independent power producers. The Company's facilities and operations are subject to laws and regulations that govern, among other things, transactions by and with purchasers of power, including utility companies, the development and construction of generation facilities, the ownership and operations of generation facilities, access to transmission, and the geographical location, zoning, land use and operation aspects of facilities and properties, including environmental matters.
