Allied World Assurance Company Holdings, Ltd or Allied World was formed in November 2001. It Bermuda-based specialty insurance and reinsurance company that underwrites a portfolio of property and casualty lines of business through offices located in Bermuda, Hong Kong, Ireland, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Allied World operates in three geographic markets: Bermuda, Europe and the United States. The Company's Bermuda insurance operations focus mainly on underwriting risks for U.S.-domiciled Fortune 1000 clients and other clients with complex insurance needs. Its Bermuda reinsurance operations focus on underwriting treaty and facultative risk, targeting cedents for property and workers compensation catastrophe risks in the United States and both large and smaller cedents for classes of property and casualty risks internationally. Allied World's European operations focus predominantly on property and casualty insurance for European and international accounts. The Company's U.S. operations focus on the middle-market and non-Fortune 1000 companies. It operates in the excess and surplus lines and admitted segments of the U.S. market. Allied World's U.S. distribution platform concentrates mainly on direct casualty and property insurance, with a particular emphasis on professional liability, healthcare, excess casualty risks and commercial property insurance. The Company aligns its distribution along retail and wholesale broking channels and through program administrators and similar relationships. Allied World has three business segments: U.S. insurance, international insurance and reinsurance. The U.S. insurance segment includes its direct insurance operations in the United States. The Company provides both primary and excess liability and other casualty coverages to the healthcare industry, including hospitals and hospital systems, managed care organizations and medical facilities such as home care providers, specialized surgery and rehabilitation centers, and outpatient clinics. The international insurance segment includes its established direct insurance operations outside of the United States. It includes its operations in Bermuda, Europe and Asia. The Company's Bermuda operations underwrite primarily larger, Fortune 1000 casualty and property risks for accounts domiciled in North America. Its reinsurance segment includes the reinsurance of property, general casualty, professional liability, specialty lines and property catastrophe coverages written by other insurance companies. The Company presently writes reinsurance on both a treaty and a facultative basis, targeting several niche markets including professional liability lines, specialty casualty, property for U.S. regional insurers, accident and health and to a lesser extent marine and aviation.
