GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Longleaf Partners Comments on Baidu - Feb 15, 2016

Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) was added to the portfolio in the second half during the China market panic, and the strong fourth quarter rebound, up 38%, resulted in the stock also being one of the strongest contributors for 2015. Baidu is the dominant internet search provider in China with 71% market share of PC and mobile search page view and revenue share over 80%. Its online search business grows at 30% per year with 50% operating margins and sells at a single-digit FCF (free cash flow) multiple. The company only focuses on Chinese language search, mastering the subtleties of its domestic market. During the fourth quarter, in the large and fast-growing online travel space, Baidu swapped its 45% stake in Qunar for a 25% stake in Ctrip. Together with Ctrip’s 37.6% stake in eLong, Ctrip will control 80% of online domestic travel booking revenues, which should lead to more rational competition and improved economics. Through this transaction, Baidu vastly improved its position to become the largest 020 (online to offline) travel platform in China. Furthermore, Baidu will de-consolidate loss making Qunar and provide more clarity to the underlying economics of the core search business. Separately, Alibaba’s offer to privatize online video company Youku Tudou during the quarter helped validate the conservatism in our appraisal of Baidu’s 80% stake in online video business iQiyi.

John Rogers Comments on Baidu Inc. - Jan 22, 2016

Some of our holdings posted solid gains for the quarter. Internet search provider Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:BIDU) outperformed after reporting better-than-expected quarterly earnings and announcing a $2 billion share buyback, rising +37.57% for the quarter. We continue to admire Baidu’s business strategy shift toward mobile and locally-focused services such as movie tickets, home delivery and car services. As such, we have been adding to our position.

David Herro Comments on Baidu - Jan 11, 2016

Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU), China’s largest Internet search engine that commands over 70% market share, was the top contributor for the quarter, returning 38%. Shares reacted positively to the company’s nine-month earnings release in October and to the company’s plans to combine their majority-controlled travel business Qunar with Ctrip. This important deal will combine the top two online travel sites in China and should lead to significantly lower subsidies and higher profitability. Additionally, the shareholder-focused management team announced a new $2 billion share repurchase program during the quarter. Finally, we believe that management’s significant investments in new businesses, such as online-to-offline services (e.g., food delivery, ride sharing, etc.), are masking the strength of the core search business, which continues to grow at a healthy rate and generates significant profits. For these reasons, we believe today’s valuation neither reflects the fair value of the company’s search business nor gives any credit for its many non-search businesses; therefore, the stock price underestimates the company’s true value.

From David Herro (Trades, Portfolio)'s Oakmark International Fund fourth quarter commentary.

John Rogers Comments on Baidu Inc. - Oct 20, 2015

Internet search firm Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:BIDU) fell -30.98% after reporting weaker-than-expected second quarter earnings and guiding third quarter sales below analysts’ consensus. Baidu is improving its search engine capabilities by investing in mobile and more locally-focused services such as movie tickets, home delivery and car services. We have been adding to our position.
