Popular, Inc. was incorporated in 1984 under the laws of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. It is a publicly owned bank holding company, which operates as a financial institution. The Corporation operates in two main as auto and equipment leasing and financing, mortgage loans, investment banking, broker-dealer and insurance services through markets: Puerto Rico - provide retail and commercial banking services through its main banking subsidiary, Banco Popular de Puerto Rico ("BPPR"), as well specialized subsidiaries. Mainland United States - It operates Banco Popular North America ("BPNA"), including its wholly-owned subsidiary E-LOAN, Inc. BPNA is a community bank providing a broad range of financial services and products to the communities it serves. The Company offers in Puerto Rico a complete array of retail and commercial banking services through its main bank subsidiary, BPPR. It offers insurance and reinsurance services through Popular Insurance, Inc., a general insurance agency, and Popular Life RE, a reinsurance company. The Company's lending activities include: Commercial, Construction, Lease Financing, Mortgage and Consumer. Since its business activities are currently concentrated mainly in Puerto Rico, its results of operations and financial condition are dependent upon the general trends of the Puerto Rico economy and, in particular, the residential and commercial real estate markets. It competes with specialized players in the local financial industry that are not subject to the same regulatory restrictions as domestic banks and bank holding companies.
