Popular Inc was incorporated in 1984 under the laws of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. It operates as a financial institution. The Corporation operates in two main markets Puerto Rico and Mainland United States. In Puerto Rico: it provides retail, including residential mortgage loans originations, and commercial banking services through it principal banking subsidiary, Banco Popular de Puerto Rico ("Banco Popular" or "BPPR"), as well as auto and equipment leasing and financing, investment banking, broker-dealer and insurance services through specialized subsidiaries. In Mainland United States: it operates Banco Popular North America ("BPNA"), including its wholly-owned subsidiary E-LOAN, Inc. ("E-LOAN"). BPNA is a community bank providing a range of financial services and products to the communities it serves. BPNA operates branches in New York, California, Illinois, New Jersey and Florida, under the name of Popular Community Bank. E-LOAN markets deposit accounts under its name for the benefit of BPNA. The Company's lending activities include: Commercial, Construction, Lease Financing, Residential Mortgage and consumer loans, credit cards. Since its business activities are currently concentrated mainly in Puerto Rico, its results of operations and financial condition are dependent upon the general trends of the Puerto Rico economy and, in particular, the residential and commercial real estate markets. It competes with specialized players in the local financial industry that are not subject to the same regulatory restrictions as domestic banks and bank holding companies.
