Grupo Financiero Santander Mexico SAB de CV, formerly known as Grupo Financiero Santander Serfin, S.A. de C.V., was organized on November 14, 1991 in Mexico. The Company is the financial holding company, and through its subsidiaries, provides financial and related services in Mexico, including retail and commercial banking, securities underwriting and brokerage and custody services, and asset management. The Company operates in two segments: Retail Banking and Global Wholesale Banking. In Retail Banking it provides retail banking services to individuals, private banking, SMEs, middle-market corporations, and government institutions. In Global Wholesale Banking, it provides services to Mexican and multinational corporations, financial groups and institutional clients such as international transaction services, credit markets, corporate finance, equity custodial and related services, treasury trading activities, proprietary trading, and international wholesale banking products and solutions. In addition, the Company has a Corporate Activities operating segment comprised of all other operational and administrative activities that are not assigned to a specific segment or product listed above. These activities include the centralized management of financial investments, the financial management of structural interest rate risk and foreign exchange position and the management of liquidity and equity through securities offerings and the management of assets and liabilities. Its products include Deposit-taking and sale and repurchase agreements transactions, corporate lending, retail lending, mortgages, credit cards, personal loans, insurance brokerage, and securities brokerage services among others. The Company competes with BBVA Bancomer, S.A., Institución de Banca Múltiple, Grupo Financiero BBVA Bancomer; Banco Nacional de México, S.A., Integrante del Grupo Financiero Banamex, which is part of Citigroup; Banco Mercantil del Norte, S.A., Institución de Banca Múltiple, Grupo Financiero Banorte; HSBC México, S.A., Institución de Banca Múltiple, Grupo Financiero HSBC; Banco Inbursa, S.A., Institución de Banca Múltiple, Grupo Financiero Inbursa; and Scotiabank Inverlat, S.A., Institución de Banca Múltiple, and Grupo Financiero Scotiabank Inverlat.
