Brown Shoe Co Inc was founded in 1878 and incorporated in 1913. The Company is a footwear retailer and wholesaler. Its activities include the operation of retail shoe stores and e-commerce websites as well as the design, sourcing and marketing of footwear for women and men. It offers licensed, branded and private-label casual, dress and athletic footwear products to women, men and children. Footwear is sold at a number of price points through multiple distribution channels both domestically and internationally. The Company currently operates approximately 1,223 retail shoe stores in the United States, Canada, China and Guam mainly under the Famous Footwear and Naturalizer names. In addition, through its Wholesale Operations segment, the Company designs, sources and markets footwear to retail stores domestically and internationally, including mass merchandisers, national chains, department stores, independent retailers, catalogs and online retailers. The Companys reportable segments include Famous Footwear, Wholesale Operations and Specialty Retail. Famous Footwear stores feature a selection of brand-name, athletic, casual and dress shoes for the entire family. Brands carried include, among others, Nike, Skechers, New Balance, Converse, adidas, DC, LifeStride, Reebok, Sperry, Asics, Puma, Dr. Scholls Shoes, Vans, BOC by Born, Sof Sole, Fergalicious and Bearpaw. Under this segment, it operated 1,044 stores, primarily selling branded footwear for the entire family. The Wholesale Operations segment sources and markets licensed, branded and private-label footwear primarily to national chains, department stores, independent retailers, mass merchandisers, online retailers, and catalogs as well as Company-owned Famous Footwear and Specialty Retail segments. The Specialty Retail segment includes 92 stores in the United States and 87 stores in Canada, selling primarily Naturalizer brand footwear in regional malls and outlet centers as well as other e-commerce businesses.
