GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Chemung Financial Corporation was incorporated on January 2, 1985 under the laws of the State of New York. The Corporation was organized for the purpose of acquiring Chemung Canal Trust Company or the Bank. The Corporation, through the Bank and CFS Group, Inc., provides financial services. Some of its offerings include demand, savings and time deposits, commercial, residential and consumer loans, letters of credit, wealth management services, employee benefit plans, brokerage services and insurance. It accepts time, demand, and savings deposits, including negotiable order of withdrawal accounts, regular savings accounts, insured money market accounts, investment certificates, fixed-rate certificates of deposit, and club accounts. The Corporation segments its loan portfolio into the following categories; commercial and agricultural; commercial mortgages; residential mortgages; and consumer loans. Commercial and agricultural loans consist of loans to small to mid-sized businesses in its market area in a diverse range of industries. Commercial mortgage loans generally have larger balances and involve more risk than residential mortgage loans, and they therefore pose higher potential losses on an individual customer basis. Residential mortgage loans are generally made on the basis of the borrower's ability to make repayment from his or her employment and other income, but are secured by real property whose value tends to be more easily ascertainable. The consumer loan segment includes home equity lines of credit and home equity loans, which exhibit many of the same risk characteristics as residential mortgages. In addition, it rents safe deposit facilities and provides networked automated teller facilities. Further, the company provides various trust services comprising services as executor and trustee under wills and agreements; and guardian, custodian, trustee, and agent for pension, profit-sharing, and other employee benefit trusts, as well as various investment, pension, estate planning, and employee benefit administrative services. The Bank operates 34 branch offices located in 11 counties in New York and Bradford County in Pennsylvania. Bank branch offices are located in following New York counties; Chemung, Broome, Cayuga, Cortland, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga and Tompkins. Chemung Financial Corporation, through its other subsidiary, CFS Group, Inc., provides various financial services, including mutual funds, full and discount brokerage services, annuity and other insurance products, and tax preparation services. The Corporation competes with local, regional and national commercial banks and thrift institutions, credit unions and other providers of financial services, such as brokerage firms, investment companies, insurance companies and internet banking institutions. The Bank is subject to regulation, supervision and examination by regulatory authorities.
