Chatham Lodging Trust was formed as a Maryland real estate investments trust in October 2009 to invest in upscale extended-stay and select-service hotels. It is a self-advised hotel investment company. The Company's properties are located in major markets with high barriers to entry, near primary demand generators for both business and leisure guests. As of December 31, 2011, it owned 18 hotels with an aggregate of 2,414 rooms located in 10 states and the District of Columbia and it held a 10.3% minority interest in the JV, which owns 64 hotels comprising an aggregate of 8,329 rooms. The Company also invested in premium-branded select-service hotels such as Courtyard by Marriott, Hampton Inn and Suites, SpringHill Suites by Marriott and Doubletree Suites. It invests primarily in premium-branded upscale extended-stay and select-service hotels with a focus on the 25 largest metropolitan markets in the United States. The Company's properties is subject to various covenants, laws, ordinances and regulations, including regulations relating to common areas and fire and safety requirements.
