CenterPoint Energy Inc is a public utility holding company. The operating subsidiaries own and operate electric transmission and distribution facilities and natural gas distribution facilities. The Company's business segments are Electric Transmission & Distribution, Natural Gas Distribution, Energy Services, Midstream Investments and Other Operations. In electric transmission and distribution segment it delivers electricity from power plants to substations, from one substation to another and to retail electric customers taking power at or above 69 kilovolts (kV) in locations throughout its certificated service territory. Its distribution network receives electricity from the transmission grid through power distribution substations and delivers electricity to end users through distribution feeders. Energy Services segment offers variable and fixed-priced physical natural gas supplies primarily to commercial and industrial customers and electric and gas utilities. It also offers a variety of natural gas management services to gas utilities, large industrial customers, electric generators, smaller commercial and industrial customers, municipalities, educational institutions and hospitals. Under the Midstream Investments segment, it is involved in gathering and processing, which primarily provides natural gas gathering, processing and fractionation services and crude oil gathering for its producer customers, transportation and storage service to natural gas producers, utilities and industrial customers. Other Operations business segment includes office buildings and other real estate used in business operations and other corporate operations that support all its business operations. The operations of Company are subject to extensive federal, state and local environmental statutes, rules and regulations.
