Coherent, Inc. was originally incorporated in California on May 26, 1966 and reincorporated in Delaware on October 1, 1990. The Company is a supplier of photonics-based solutions in a range of commercial and scientific research applications. It designs, manufactures, services and markets lasers and related accessories for a diverse group of customers. The Company is organized into two operating segments namely Commercial Lasers and Components (CLC) and Specialty Lasers and Systems (SLS). CLC focuses on higher volume products that are offered in set configurations. SLS develops and manufacturers configurable, advanced-performance products largely serving the microelectronics and scientific research markets. The Company sells a variety of components and lasers to medical laser companies in end-user applications such as ophthalmology, aesthetic, surgical, therapeutic and dentistry. Its DIAMOND series CO2 lasers are widely used in ophthalmic, aesthetic and surgical markets. It's Compass and Sapphire series of lasers are used in the retinal scanning market in diagnostic imaging systems as well as new ground breaking in-vivo imaging applications. The Company competes against a number of large public and private companies, including CVI Melles Griot, Cymer, Inc., GSI Group, Inc., IPG Photonics Corporation, JDS Uniphase Corporation, Newport Corporation, Rofin-Sinar Technologies, Inc., and Trumpf GmbH, as well as other smaller companies. The Company is subject to a variety of federal, state, local and foreign environmental regulations relating to the use, storage, discharge and disposal of hazardous chemicals used during its manufacturing process or requiring design changes or recycling of products it manufacture.
