Canadian Solar Inc was incorporated under the laws of the Province of Ontario, Canada in October 2001. The Company changed its jurisdiction by continuing under the Canadian federal corporate statute, the Canada Business Corporations Act, or CBCA, effective June 1, 2006. As a result, it was governed by the CBCA. The Company is a solar power company. It is vertically integrated provider of solar power products and system solutions with operations in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Australia and Asia. The Company designs, develops, and manufactures solar wafers, cells and solar power products. The Company operates its business in two principal reportable business segments, i.e., module segment and project segment. The module segment primarily involves design, development, manufacture and sales of solar power products and solar system kits to third parties. The project segment involves solar power project development, EPC services and O&M services. Its solar power products include standard solar modules and specialty solar products. Its products include solar modules built to general specifications for use in a wide range of residential, commercial and industrial solar power generation systems. Specialty solar products consist of customized solar modules that its customers incorporate into their own products and complete specialty products, such as portable solar home systems. It sells its products primarily under its "Canadian Solar" brand name. Its product lines range from modules of medium power, to high efficiency, high-power output mono-crystalline modules, as well as a range of specialty products. The Company currently sells its products to a diverse customer base in various markets worldwide, including China, Japan, the U.S., Germany, Spain, Italy, France, the Czech Republic, Canada and India, among other countries. Its customers primarily include distributors, system integrators, project developers and installers/EPC companies. The Company competes with international companies such as First Solar and Sharp Solar, and China-based companies such as Yingli, Trina and Jinko. Some of its competitors are developing or producing products based on alternative solar technologies, such as thin film PV materials, that may ultimately have costs similar to, or lower than, the Company's projected costs.
