GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Baron Funds Comments on Concho Resources - May 29, 2014

Concho Resources, Inc. (CXO) is our latest energy investment. We believe our country is finally embarking on the road to energy independence. Introduced earlier, in the Top Contributors section, we believe Concho is a Baron "type" company that at the time of purchase was trading at a greater than 20% discount to its net asset value. It also happened to be the second largest investment in our Energy and Resources Fund, run by Jamie Stone, who happens to be the smartest energy investor we know (I am a committed shareholder in his Fund).

Baron Funds Comments on Concho Resources - May 29, 2014

Concho Resources, Inc. (CXO) is an independent E&P company focused on the Permian Basin in West Texas. Concho shares rose 24% for the period held as the company provided greater detail about a significant increase in its oil and gas resource potential across its acreage position in the Permian and particularly in the Delaware sub-basin. The combination of the increase in the company's drilling inventory, strong initial well results and a faster than expected acceleration in its drilling inventory bode well for Concho's production growth outlook and for improvements in its net asset value.

Concho Resources, Inc. (CXO) is an independent exploration & production ("E&P") company focused on the Permian Basin in West Texas. The Permian Basin has been the hottest E&P play among energy investors in the past six months. Concho's increased disclosure regarding its well results in the Delaware and Midland sub-basins, and its indication that it may accelerate its growth in 2014 beyond its historical and expected growth rate, also have contributed to the positive share price performance in the third quarter. Concho Resources, Inc. (CXO) is an independent oil and natural gas company engaged in the acquisition, development, exploitation and exploration of oil and natural gas properties. Its core operations are focused in the Permian Basin of southeastern New Mexico and west Texas. Concho has an experienced management team that has bought and sold and operated oil and gas properties throughout the Permian Basin for over 30 years. The management has successfully created, built and sold two prior Concho entities to very large entities, creating significant shareholder value. The current incarnation of Concho has been built to grow through a combination of strategic acquisitions and the application of modern drilling and completion techniques to fields that have not previously been exploited using such techniques.

Concho Resources Inc. is a Delaware corporation, which was formed in February 2006 as a result of the combination of Concho Equity Holdings Corp. and a portion of the oil and natural gas properties and related assets owned by Chase Oil Corporation and certain of its affiliates. It is an independent oil and natural gas company, which is engaged in the acquisition, development, exploitation and exploration of producing oil and natural gas properties. Its core operating areas are located in the Permian Basin region of Southeast New Mexico and West Texas, a large onshore oil and natural gas basin in the United States. The Permian Basin is one of the most prolific oil and natural gas producing regions in the United States and is characterized by an extensive production history, mature infrastructure, long reserve life, multiple producing horizons and enhanced recovery potential. It refers to its two core operating areas as the New Mexico Permian, where it primarily targets the Yeso formation, and Texas Permian, where it primarily targets the Wolfberry, a term applied to the combined Wolfcamp and Spraberry horizons. Its core operations are focused in the Permian Basin of Southeast New Mexico and West Texas. It underlies an area of Southeast New Mexico and West Texas approximately 250 miles wide and 300 miles long. Commercial accumulations of hydrocarbons occur in multiple stratigraphic horizons, at depths ranging from approximately 1,000 feet to over 25,000 feet. The production of oil and natural gas is subject to regulation under the local, state and federal statutes, rules, orders and regulations.
