E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company was founded in 1802 and was incorporated in Delaware in 1915. It is a science and engineering company that mainly offers products and patents applications for agriculture, nutrition, electronics and communications, safety and protection, home and construction, transportation and apparel. It consists of 13 businesses which are aggregated into eight reportable segments which include Agriculture, Electronics & Communications, Industrial Biosciences, Nutrition & Health, Performance Chemicals, Performance Materials, Safety & Protection and Pharmaceuticals. The company includes certain embryonic businesses not included in the reportable segments, such as pre-commercial programs, and nonaligned businesses in other. The company has operations in more than 90 countries worldwide and about 60 percent of consolidated net sales are made to customers outside the United States of America. The company competes with companies that have strong intellectual property estates supporting the use of biotechnology to enhance products, particularly agricultural and bio-based products. The company is subject to various legal proceedings arising out of the normal course of its business includes product liability, intellectual property, commercial, environmental and antitrust lawsuits.
