Denny’s (NASDAQ:DENN) is an iconic casual dining chain with approximately 1,500 franchises and 160 company-owned restaurants. The company came across our contrarian screens repeatedly during years of decline under a series of previous management teams. We invested in 2011 when strong new management took over with a coherent turnaround plan. Denny’s made solid progress, stabilizing the business with menu and marketing improvements and using solid free-cash flow to pay down debt, repurchase shares and fund a successful restaurant remodel program, though sales growth remained subdued. An inflection point came in 2014 as sales improved significantly, aided by lower gas prices that alleviated pressure on Denny’s core customer. This is a trend that accelerated through the remainder of the year and has held up in 2015. We remain shareholders though we reduced our position significantly due to the rise in the stock.

Denny's Corp is a Delaware Corporation. It operates as a family-style restaurant chain. Denny's, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Denny's, Inc., owns and operates the Denny's restaurant brand. At December 26, 2012, the Denny's brand consisted of 1,700 franchised, licensed, and company operated restaurants, including 1,599 restaurants in the United States and 101 restaurants in international locations. At year end, 1,537 of its restaurants were franchised/licensed, representing 90% of the total restaurants, and 163 were company operated. The Original Grand Slam, introduced in 1977, remains one of its popular menu items. The Denny's menu offers a large selection of high-quality, moderately priced products designed to appeal to all types of guests. It offers a wide variety of items for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, in addition to appetizers, desserts and beverages. Through its wholly-owned subsidiaries, it has certain trademarks and service marks registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and in international jurisdictions, including 'Denny's', 'Grand Slam', '$2 $4 $6 $8 Value Menu' and 'Fit Fare'. It and its franchisees are subject to local, state, federal and international laws and regulations governing various aspects of the restaurant business.
