Business Description

DTE Energy Holding Company was incorporated in 1995 in the State of Michigan. The Company, through its subsidiaries, is engaged in the business of providing electricity and natural gas sales, distribution and storage services throughout southeastern Michigan. Its main operating segments are Electric Utility, Gas Utility, Non-Utility Operations, and Corporate and Other. The Electric Utility segment consists principally of Detroit Edison, which is engaged in the generation, purchase, distribution and sale of electricity to approximately 2.1 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in southeastern Michigan. The Gas Utility segment consists of MichCon and Citizens. MichCon is engaged in the purchase, storage, transportation, distribution and sale of natural gas to approximately 1.2 million residential, commercial and industrial customers throughout Michigan and the sale of storage and transportation capacity. Citizens distribute natural gas in Adrian, Michigan to approximately 17,000 customers. Non-Utility Operations consists of Gas Storage and Pipelines, which consists of natural gas pipeline, gathering and storage businesses; Unconventional Gas Production, which is engaged in unconventional gas and oil project development and production; Power and Industrial Projects, which is comprised of projects that deliver energy and utility-type products and services to industrial, commercial and institutional customers; provide coal transportation and marketing; and sell electricity from biomass-fired energy projects; and Energy Trading, which consists of energy marketing and trading operations. Corporate and Other, includes various holding company activities, holds certain non-utility debt and energy-related investments. Competition in the regulated electric distribution business is primarily from the on-site generation of industrial customers and from distributed generation applications by industrial and commercial customers. Competition in the gas business primarily involves other natural gas providers, as well as providers of alternative fuels and energy sources. The Company is subject to numerous environmental regulations. These regulations govern air emissions, water quality, wastewater discharge, and disposal of solid and hazardous waste.
