GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Charles De Vaulx Comments on DeVry - Jun 06, 2016

As for DeVry (NYSE:DV) (which only the Worldwide Fund owns), our intrinsic value estimate was impaired as we underestimated the extent of the decline of the BTM (Business, Technology, Management) segment. We note, however, that the overwhelming majority of DeVry’s profits come from its healthcare schools (Nursing, Veterinary, and Physicians) where student loan defaults have been negligible.

FPA Capital Comments on DeVry - May 09, 2016

In October 2014, an inter-agency task force was formed to share information about investigations into for-profit education. It included the Federal Trade Commission, Department of Justice, Veterans Administration, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Securities and Exchange Commission and numerous state Attorneys General. We have followed the regulatory developments closely, and over the previous six months, it appears that the fervor for prosecuting for-profit schools has increased meaningfully. Our analysis had previously assumed that the regulatory headwinds would diminish over time, primarily because three years of high-level regulatory scrutiny had not produced a substantial case against the industry’s “good actors.” However, the recent FTC lawsuit brought against DeVry (NYSE:DV), the pending FTC investigation of University of Phoenix, and the increased scrutiny by various AGs and military institutions have given us pause. We believe both schools continue to serve an important function in society, and that the regulatory scrutiny will indeed ultimately die down. But we now believe the costs of negative publicity, a tarnished brand, and regulatory fines, restrictions, and restitutions could be greater than we initially forecast.

Westport Select Cap Fund Comments on DeVry Education Group Inc - May 29, 2015

Both DeVry Education and United Rentals had risen more than 30% last year so some profit taking might have been expected. However, DeVry Education (DV), a for-profit education company, reported disappointing new student results for the December quarter even as it beat earnings estimates. Future earnings will be negatively impacted without improvement in new student starts.

Charles de Vaulx Comments on DeVry Education Group Inc - May 28, 2015

Conversely, one area that hurt us this quarter was our U.S. stocks. They averaged a return of -1.6%, compared to those in the benchmark which averaged a gain of 1.2%, and detracted -0.4% from our return led by poor performance from DeVry Education Group Inc. (DV), a for-profit higher education company in the consumer discretionary sector. We believe this company is suffering unfairly from issues plaguing its competitors and we think many investors fail to recognize the quality of DeVry’s medical and nursing schools, thus we took advantage of the share price weakness to add to our position.
