El Paso Electric Co was incorporated in Texas in 1901.It is a public utility engaged in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in an area of approximately 10,000 square miles in west Texas and southern New Mexico. The Company also serves the requirements of wholesale customer in Texas. The Company owns or has significant ownership interests in several electrical generating facilities providing it with a net dependable generating capability of approximately 1,852 MW. The Company's current generation portfolio exhibits lower carbon intensity than any other utility in the southwestern United States and the Company continues to expand its portfolio of renewable energy sources, particularly solar photovoltaic generation. As of December 31, 2013, the Company has power purchase agreements for 107 MW from solar photovoltaic generation facilities. The Company serves approximately 394,000 residential, commercial, industrial, public authority and wholesale customers. The Company distributes electricity to retail customers principally in El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico. In addition, the Company's wholesale sales include sales for resale to other electric utilities and power marketers. Principal industrial, public authority and other large retail customers of the Company include United States military installations, including Fort Bliss in Texas and White Sands Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, an oil refinery, two large universities, several medical centers and a steel production facility. The Company owns an interest, along with six other utilities, in the three nuclear generating units and common facilities at Palo Verde. The Arizona Public Service Company serves, as operating agent for Palo Verde, and under the ANPP Participation Agreement, the Company has limited ability to influence operations and costs at Palo Verde. The Company is subject to regulation with respect to air, soil and water quality, solid waste disposal and other environmental matters by federal, state, tribal and local authorities.
