Business Description

Companhia Paranaense de Energia - Copel was incorporated under the laws of Brazil in 1954. The Company is engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity in the Brazilian State of Parana, pursuant to concessions granted by the Brazilian regulatory agency for the electricity sector, ANEEL. It also provides telecommunications and other services. At December 31, 2008, the Company operated 17 hydroelectric plants and one thermoelectric plant, with a total installed capacity of 4,549.6 MW. It produces electricity almost exclusively through its hydroelectric plants. It generated 20,372 GWh in 2008, 18,134 GWh in 2007, and 10,358 GWh in 2006. The generation of electrical energy at the Company's hydroelectric plants is supervised and coordinated by its generation operation center in the city of Curitiba. The Company holds concessions to distribute electricity in approximately 98.5% of the 399 municipalities in the State of Parana and in the municipality of Porto Uniao in the State of Santa Catarina. Electricity is transferred from power plants to customers through transmission and distribution systems. Transmission is the bulk transfer of electricity from generating facilities to the distribution system by means of the Interconnected Transmission System. The Company's transmission system consists of all its assets of 230 kV and above and a small portion of its 69 kV and 138 kV assets, which are used to transmit the electricity it generates and the energy it receives from other sources. In addition to using its transmission lines to provide energy to customers in the State of Parana, the Company also transmits energy through the Interconnected Transmission System. Distribution is the transfer of electricity from the distribution system to Final Customers. The Company's distribution system consists of a widespread network of overhead lines and substations with voltages up to 138 kV. Electricity is supplied to smaller industrial customers at the higher end of the voltage range and is supplied to residential, commercial and other customers at the lower end of the range. At December 31, 2008, the Company provided electricity in a geographic area encompassing approximately 98% of the State of Parana and served over 3.5 million customers. At December 31, 2008, it owned and operated 1,835.2 km of transmission lines and 179,187.6 km of distribution lines. The Company provides services to most of the major Brazilian telecommunication companies that operate in the State of Parana. It has 569 clients, which also include supermarkets, universities, banks, internet service providers and television networks. It also provides a number of different telecommunication services to its subsidiaries. At December 31, 2008, the Company generated electricity at 17 hydroelectric plants and one thermoelectric plant, for a total installed capacity of 4,549.6 MW.
