Energy Company of Parana is incorporated in Brazil. It was formed in 1954. The Company is engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity in the Brazilian State of Parana, pursuant to concessions granted by the Brazilian regulatory agency for the electricity sector, ANEEL. It also provides telecommunications and other services. At December 31, 2012, the Company operated 18 hydroelectric plants, one wind plant and one thermoelectric plant, with a total installed capacity of 4,737.1 MW. It produces electricity almost exclusively through its hydroelectric plants. It generated 20,372 GWh in 2008, 18,134 GWh in 2007, and 10,358 GWh in 2006. The generation of electrical energy at the Company's hydroelectric plants is supervised and coordinated by its generation operation center in the city of Curitiba. The Company holds concessions to distribute electricity in 394 of the 399 municipalities in the State of Paraná and in the municipality of Porto União in the State of Santa Catarina. Electricity is transferred from power plants to customers through transmission and distribution systems. Transmission is the bulk transfer of electricity from generating facilities to the distribution system by means of the Interconnected Transmission System. The Company's distribution system consists of a widespread network of overhead lines and substations with voltages up to 138 kV and a small portion of its 230 kV assets. At December 31, 2012, the Company provided electricity in a geographic area encompassing approximately 98% of the State of Parana and served over 4 million customers. At December 31, 2012, it owned and operated 2,023.3 km of transmission lines and 186,365.2 km of distribution lines. The Company provides services to the major Brazilian telecommunication companies that operate in the State of Parana. It has 3,141 clients, which also include supermarkets, universities, banks, internet service providers and television networks. It also provides a number of different telecommunication services to its subsidiaries. The Company is involved in various initiatives to study the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of certain hydroelectric generation projects. These proposed generation projects would have a total of 343.6 MW of installed capacity. The Company's construction and operation activities for the generation, transmission and distribution of electric energy, distribution of natural gas and its telecommunications operations are subject to federal, state and municipal environmental regulations.
