GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Business Description

Industry: Brokers & Exchanges » Insurance Brokers
Compare:BRO, AON, WSH, MMC, NFP » details
Erie Indemnity Co is a Pennsylvania business corporation incorporated in 1925. It has been the managing attorney-in-fact for the subscribers "policyholders" at the Erie Insurance Exchange "Exchange" since 1925. The Exchange is a subscriber owned, Pennsylvania-domiciled, reciprocal insurer that writes property and casualty insurance. This is done in accordance with a subscribers' agreement', a "limited power of attorney" executed by each subscriber "policyholder", appointing the Company as their common attorney-in-fact to transact business on their behalf and to manage their affairs at the Exchange. The Company operates its business in four reportable segments; management operations, property and casualty insurance operations, life insurance operations and investment operations. Its management operations generates internal management fee revenue, which accrues to the Company's shareholder interest, as it provides services to the Exchange relating to the sales, underwriting, and issuance of policies. The property and casualty insurance operations generate revenue, which accrues to the non-controlling interest, by insuring preferred and standard risks, with personal lines comprising 71% of the 2013 direct written premiums and commercial lines comprising the remaining 29%. Its life insurance operations generate revenue from the sale of individual and group life insurance policies and fixed annuities. These products are offered through the property and casualty insurance agency force to provide an opportunity to cross-sell both personal and commercial accounts. Its investment operations generate revenue from its fixed maturity, equity security and alternative investment portfolios. Property and casualty insurers are subject to extensive supervision in the states in which they do business. Property and casualty insurers generally compete on the basis of customer service, price, consumer recognition, coverages offered, claims handling, financial stability and geographic coverage. Property and casualty insurers are subject to supervision and regulation in the states in which they transact business.
