Extra Space Storage Inc was formed as a Maryland corporation on April 30, 2004. The Company closed its initial public offering on August 17, 2004. It is a fully integrated, self-administered and self-managed real estate investment trust. The Company owns, operates, manages, acquires, develops and redevelops professionally managed self-storage facilities. The Company operates in three segments including; rental operations; tenant reinsurance; and property management, acquisition and development. The Company's rental operations activities include rental operations of stores in which it has an ownership interest. The Tenant reinsurance activities include the reinsurance of risks relating to the loss of goods stored by tenants in the Company's stores. Its property management, acquisition and development activities include managing, acquiring, developing and selling stores. The Company competes with many other entities engaged in real estate investment activities for acquisitions of self-storage properties and other assets, including national, regional and local operators and developers of self-storage properties. It is subject to various laws, ordinances and regulations, including regulations relating to lien sale rights and procedures.
