Extra Space Storage Inc was formed as a Maryland corporation on April 30, 2004. It is a fully integrated, self-administered and self-managed real estate investment trust. It owns, operates, manages, acquires, develops and redevelops professionally managed self-storage facilities. It operates in three segments, namely: rental operations; tenant reinsurance; and property management, acquisition and development. Its rental operations activities include rental operations of self-storage facilities in which it has an ownership interest. Tenant reinsurance activities include the reinsurance of risks relating to the loss of goods stored by tenants in the Company's self-storage facilities. Its property management, acquisition and development activities include managing, acquiring, developing and selling self-storage facilities. The Company competes with many other entities engaged in real estate investment activities for acquisitions of self-storage properties and other assets, including national, regional and local operators and developers of self-storage properties. It is subject to various laws, ordinances and regulations, including regulations relating to lien sale rights and procedures.
