FBL Financial Group, Inc.was incorporated in Iowa in October 1993. Its subsidiary, Farm Bureau Life, began operations in 1945 and subsidiary EquiTrust Life began operations under that name in 1998. Several other subsidiaries support various functional areas and affiliates by providing investment advisory, marketing and distribution, and leasing services. In addition, the company manages all aspects of two Farm Bureau affiliated property-casualty insurance companies which operate predominately in eight states in the Midwest and West. FBL Financial sells individual life and annuity products mainly under the consumer brand names Farm Bureau Financial Services and EquiTrust Financial Services. These brand identities are represented by the distribution channels of its subsidiaries, Farm Bureau Life Insurance company and EquiTrust Life Insurance Company. Its 2,020 Farm Bureau Life agents are multi-line agents who sell both property-casualty insurance products and life insurance and investment products under the Farm Bureau name. The company focuses on needs-based selling and have a portfolio of life insurance and annuity products so that it has attractive products available to satisfy the needs of its agents and customers. EquiTrust Life was established to capitalize on opportunities to grow outside the Company's traditional Farm Bureau niche marketplace and provide diversification to the overall FBL organization. Today, EquiTrust Life business consists of its independent channel, a closed block of coinsured business and variable alliance partnerships. FBL Financial continues to offer a variety of traditional fixed rate and index annuities. Sales through its Farm Bureau Life distribution channel are conducted in 15 states which it characterizes as: multi-line states - Arizona, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota and Utah; and life only states - Colorado, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Wyoming. EquiTrust Life is national in scope and is licensed to sell products in the District of Columbia and all states except New York. The company analyses operations by reviewing financial information regarding products that are aggregated into four product segments. The product segments are Traditional Annuity - Exclusive Distribution, Traditional Annuity- Independent Distribution, Traditional and Universal Life Insurance and Variable. The company sells a variety of traditional annuity products through exclusive agency force. The Exclusive Annuity segment primarily consists of fixed rate annuities and supplementary contracts. The Independent Annuity segment consists of fixed rate annuities, supplementary contracts and index annuities sold by independent agents or assumed through coinsurance agreements.
