Processed and packaged foods manufacturer Flowers Foods, Inc. (FLO) reported a second quarter relatively in-line with analyst expectations. Input costs, however, continued to be an issue with the summer drought negatively impacting wheat costs. Flowers Foods produced consistent double digit earnings gains during much of the last decade but has seen relatively flat earnings the past two years. We expect earnings growth will be restored in 2013.

Business Description

Flowers Foods, Inc. was incorporated in Georgia in 2000. It is a producer and marketer of packaged bakery foods for retail and foodservice customers. The Company produces breads, buns, rolls, snack cakes and pastries that are distributed fresh to U.S. customers in the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southwest as well as select markets in California and Nevada and frozen to customers nationwide. The Company consists of two business segments: direct-store-delivery (DSD) and warehouse delivery. The DSD segment is focused on the production and marketing of bakery products to U.S. customers in the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southwest as well as select markets in California and Nevada mainly through its direct-store-delivery system. In its warehouse delivery segment, the Company produces snack cakes for sale to retail, vending, and co-pack customers as well as frozen bread, rolls and buns for sale to retail and foodservice customers. Its warehouse products are distributed nationally through mass merchandisers and brokers, as well as through warehouse and vending distributors. Additionally, the Company distributes to retail outlets to U.S. customers in the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southwest as well as select markets in California and Nevada through its DSD system. The Company's main baking ingredients are flour, sweeteners and shortening. It also uses paper products, such as corrugated cardboard and films and plastics to package its baked foods. The Company's fresh baked foods customer base includes mass merchandisers, supermarkets and other grocery retailers, restaurants, fast-food chains, food wholesalers, institutions and vending companies. It also sells returned and surplus product through a system of thrift outlets. The Company's packaged bakery snack products under the Mrs. Freshley's brand are sold mainly to customers who distribute the product nationwide through multiple channels of distribution, including mass merchandisers, supermarkets, vending outlets and convenience stores. It also produces packaged bakery snack products for the DSD system under its BlueBird brand. Its frozen bakery products are sold to foodservice distributors, institutions, retail in-store bakeries and restaurants under its European Bakers brand and under private labels. The United States packaged bakery category is intensely competitive and is comprised of large food companies, large independent bakeries with national distribution and smaller regional and local bakeries. Primary national competitors include Interstate Bakeries Corporation, Sara Lee Corporation, Grupo Bimbo S.A. de C.V., McKee Foods Corporation and Campbell Soup Company. Competitors for fresh packaged bakery snack products include Interstate Bakeries Corporation, McKee Foods Corporation and many regional companies who produce both branded and private label product.
