GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Guru Investment Theses on Financial Engines Inc

Baron Funds Comments on Financial Engines Inc - Mar 24, 2015

Shares of Financial Engines, Inc. (FNGN), a service provider to defined contribution plans and individual investors, have declined by approximately 50% from their peak in early 2014.The Fund took advantage of low share prices to add to the position it established in the previous quarter. The stock remained weak in the fourth quarter following an unexpected management change. The new CEO has substantial operating and marketing experience, and has worked for Financial Engines since 2001. Accordingly, we think this change could be a positive and our long-term investment premise still holds. Financial Engines is the dominant player in a $5 trillion defined contribution retirement market. The company currently has contracts encompassing approximately $1 trillion in plan assets and manages over $100 billion. We believe there is significant potential to increase both figures through increased sales to plan sponsors, improved marketing to plan participants and broadened product offerings. Additionally, we believe the company can eventually use its expertise to service the IRA and defined benefit market, each with an additional $5 trillion in assets. We believe Financial Engines’ essential advice offering and plan connectivity advantage should result in significant client growth and a profitable recurring revenue stream. (Michael Baron)

Baron Growth Fund Comments on Financial Engines Inc - Oct 24, 2014

Shares of Financial Engines, Inc. (FNGN), a service provider to defined contribution plans and individual investors, fell in the third quarter. While the company continues to penetrate the market, investors have become concerned about profitability and competition. Gross profit yield continues to gradually decline as plan providers use their gatekeeper positions to receive a higher share incremental economics. Investors are also concerned that cheaper target date funds could take market share. We retain conviction about the company’s unique product and significant market opportunity. (Michael Baron)

The share price of Financial Engines, Inc. (FNGN), a service provider to defined contribution plans and individual investors, has declined by approximately 50% year-to-date. Although we thought its valuation was justified by its growth prospects, lower profit yield in 2014 and investor rotation away from less established businesses led to the drop in share value. We took advantage of its attractive stock price to add to the Fund’s investment and believe its long-term investment premise still holds. Financial Engines is the dominant player in a $5 trillion market, with roughly $900 billion in plan assets under contract and $100 billion in assets under management. Significant potential exists to add to these amounts through increased sales to plan sponsors and improved marketing to plan participants and broadening product offerings. Additionally, we believe the company should eventually be able to use its expertise to service the IRA and defined benefit market, each of which represents an additional $5 trillion in assets. We believe that Financial Engines’ essential advice offering and plan connectivity advantage will result in significant client growth and a highly profitable recurring revenue stream. Baron Funds Comments on Financial Engines - May 05, 2014

Financial Engines, Inc. (NASDAQ:FNGN), the nation's largest defined contribution managed account provider, declined 27% in the quarter after they reported lower than expected earnings. The stock had been a huge winner in 2013 and gave up some of its gains. We expect the company to continue to grow by continuing to penetrate existing accounts, adding new plans or "assets under contract" and selling new services, such as income plus and social security advice. We consider the company to be very unique and well-positioned for significant growth and believe it deserves to trade at a high multiple.

Baron Funds Comments on Financial Engines - May 02, 2014

Shares of Financial Engines, Inc. (NASDAQ:FNGN), an investment accounts advisor, declined in the first quarter, in response to fourth quarter results that missed expectations due to modest margin contraction. In addition, asset growth was a bit less than prior periods. It is not unusual for this fast growing business to have "lumpy" quarterly results, however. Financial Engines is still gaining new plans and converting assets to its professionally managed service. It is developing and implementing new products and increasing marketing spend, which we think should improve enrollment rates over the coming years. Baron Growth Fund has about tripled its money in this investment over the past four years. (Michael Baron)

Financial Engines Inc was incorporated on May 13, 1996 under the laws of the state of California. The Company provides independent, technology-enabled portfolio management services, investment advice and retirement income services to participants in employer-sponsored defined contribution retirement plans, such as 401(k) plans. It helps investors plan for retirement by offering personalized plans for saving and investing, as well as by providing assessments of retirement income needs and readiness, regardless of the investors personal wealth or investment account size. It uses its proprietary advice technology platform to provide its services to millions of retirement plan participants on a cost-efficient basis. The Company targets three key constituencies in the retirement plan market: plan participants, plan sponsors and plan providers. It offers three main services: Professional Management, Online Advice & Retirement Evaluation. Professional Management is a discretionary managed account service designed for plan participants who want affordable, personalized and professional portfolio management services; investment advice and retirement help from an independent investment advisor without the conflicts of interest that could arise when an advisor offers proprietary products. Online Advice is an Internet-based non-discretionary investment advisory service designed for plan participants who manage their portfolios directly and want to receive personalized investment advice. Retirement Evaluation is a retirement readiness assessment provided to plan participants upon plan rollout and generally annually thereafter, together with Professional Management enrollment materials. It provides personalized portfolio management services, investment advice and retirement income services to plan participants through plan providers. The Company maintains an ongoing research program to improve and extend its investment methodologies as well as portfolio management and investment advisory services. It competes with many investment advice providers competing for business from individual investors, financial advisors and institutional customers. The Company is subject to state and federal regulations related to privacy, data use and security.
