GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Guru Michael Price Continues to Invest in Financial Services
Value investor Michael Price could be featured in a quarterly version of the Dos Equis beer commercials. He doesn’t always invest in a lot of companies in a given quarter, but, when he does (and even when he doesn’t), it is likely to be in financial services. That is where nearly 28% of his investment activity is, more than double any other sector. Read more...
If You Don't Care About a Company's Story, You Don't Care About What Happens to Your Money
Michael Price (Trades, Portfolio), manager of MFP Investors, likes to buy his stocks from companies that are sailing on rough waters. He does not go for the nice and comfortable stocks that are a guaranteed win – well, as guaranteed as you can get in the market; we all know nothing is promised when it comes to investing – instead, he looks at companies that are selling their shares 30-40% below their estimated intrinsic value. Franklin Financial Corp, a Virginia corporation, was incorporated in December 2010. It operates as a holding company for Franklin Federal. Franklin Federal is a federally chartered savings bank. It operates as a community-oriented financial institution offering traditional financial services to consumers and businesses in its primary market area. It attracts deposits from the general public and uses those funds to originate commercial real estate loans, including nonresidential real estate and multi-family real estate loans, and residential mortgage loans. It has in the past originated construction and land and land development loans but given local market conditions, it currently is originating such loans on a limited basis. It conducts its lending and deposit activities primarily with individuals and businesses in its primary market area. It operates eight full-service retail banking offices in the Greater Richmond area of Central Virginia, including one branch at its corporate headquarters in Glen Allen. The Company considers the City of Richmond and the Counties of Henrico, Hanover and Chesterfield, Virginia, and the surrounding areas to be its primary market area. It also makes commercial real estate loans in other areas of Virginia, primarily within 120 miles of Richmond, as well as a limited number of such loans in North Carolina. It offers fixed-rate and, to a lesser extent, adjustable-rate mortgage loans secured by commercial real estate. It offers multi-family real estate loans that are generally secured by properties in its primary market area and the surrounding 120 mile radius. The Company's origination of residential mortgage loans enables borrowers to purchase or refinance existing homes located in its primary market area. It originates construction loans for one-to four-family homes, multi-family properties and nonresidential commercial real estate. It originates loans to developers for the purpose of purchasing and/or developing vacant land in its primary market area and in areas within 120 miles of its primary market area, typically for residential subdivisions. It offers, on a limited basis, consumer loans and second mortgages. Its investment objectives are to provide and maintain liquidity, to provide collateral for pledging requirements, to assist in maintaining an acceptable level of interest rate and credit risk, to provide an alternate source of low-risk investments when demand for loans is weak and to generate a favorable return. The Company has a partnership with a third-party registered broker-dealer, PrimeVest Financial Services, Inc. (PrimeVest). Through PrimeVest, it offers customers a complete range of nondeposit investment products, including mutual funds, debt, equity and government securities, retirement accounts, insurance products and fixed and variable annuities.
