GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Business Description

First South Bancorp, Inc. is a Virginia corporation, incorporated on January 7, 1999. It serves as the holding Company for First South Bank, a North Carolina chartered commercial bank. The bank has one operating segment, the providing of general commercial banking services to its markets located in the state of North Carolina. The Company attracts deposits from the general public and invests these funds in commercial real estate loans, commercial business loans, consumer loans and loans secured by first mortgages on owner-occupied, single-family residences in the bank's market area. First South Bancorp makes loans and obtains deposits throughout eastern, northeastern, southeastern and central North Carolina, where the Bank's offices are located. The bank's loan originations are derived from a number of sources, including referrals from depositors and borrowers, repeat customers, advertising, calling officers as well as walk-in customers. The bank's solicitation programs consist of advertisements in local media, in addition to participation in different community organizations and events. Additionally, the Bank also offers adjustable-rate residential mortgage loans. The bank also offers residential and commercial construction loans, with a large portion of such loans originated to date being for the construction of single-family dwellings in the Bank's primary market area. The bank underwrites its commercial business loans on the basis of the borrower's cash flow and ability to service the debt from earnings rather than on the basis of underlying collateral value, and the bank seeks to structure such loans to have more than one source of repayment.
