GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

First South Bancorp, Inc., is a bank holding company. Through its subsidiary it operates commercial banking business & offers checking accounts, money market accounts, statement savings accounts, Individual Retirement accounts & certificates of deposits.

First South Bancorp Inc. is a Virginia corporation was formed on October 1996. The Company serves as the holding Company for First South Bank, or the Bank, a North Carolina chartered commercial bank. The Company oversees the business of the Bank and operating a commercial banking business through the Bank. It provides commercial banking services to its markets located in the state of North Carolina. It attracts deposits mainly from within the market area by offering a variety of deposit instruments, including checking accounts, money market accounts, statement savings accounts, Individual Retirement Accounts, and certificates of deposits. In addition to deposits, the Bank derives funds from loan principal and interest repayments, maturities and paydowns on investment securities, and interest payments thereon. It generates loans and deposits throughout eastern and central North Carolina where the Bank's offices are located. Further, the Bank sells single-family mortgage loans that it originates to the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation. It also exchanges single-family mortgage loans for mortgage-backed securities with FHLMC. Its lending activities are subject to the Bank's written, non-discriminatory underwriting standards, its outside investors, and to loan origination procedures prescribed by the Bank's Board of Directors and its management. Additionally, it offers fixed-rate and adjustable-rate residential mortgage loans and residential and commercial construction loans. The Bank underwrites its commercial business loans on the basis of the borrower's cash flow and ability to service the debt from earnings rather than on the basis of underlying collateral value, and the bank seeks to structure such loans to have more than one source of repayment.
