First South Bancorp, Inc., is a Virginia corporation, incorporated on January 7, 1999. It serves as the holding Company for First South Bank (Bank), a North Carolina chartered commercial bank. The principal business of Company is overseeing the business of the Bank and operating through the Bank a commercial banking business. The Bank has one operating segment, the providing of general commercial banking services to its markets located in the state of North Carolina. The Bank attracts deposits mainly from within the market area by offering a variety of deposit instruments, including checking accounts, money market accounts, statement savings accounts, Individual Retirement Accounts, and certificates of deposits which range in maturity from seven days to five years. Deposits are the main source of the Bank's funds for lending, investment activities and general operational purposes. In addition to deposits, the Bank derives funds from loan principal and interest repayments, maturities and paydowns on investment securities, and interest payments thereon. The Bank's primary market area for gathering deposits and/or originating loans is central, eastern, northeastern and southeastern North Carolina. The bank's solicitation programs consist of advertisements in local media, in addition to participation in different community organizations and events. The Bank also offers adjustable-rate residential mortgage loans and residential and commercial construction loans. The bank underwrites its commercial business loans on the basis of the borrower's cash flow and ability to service the debt from earnings rather than on the basis of underlying collateral value, and the bank seeks to structure such loans to have more than one source of repayment.
