GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Business Description

Industry: Oil & Gas - E&P » Oil & Gas E&P
Compare:OJSCY, APC, APA, HRTPY, SGTZY » details
Forest Oil Corp was incorporated in New York in 1924, as the successor to a company formed in 1916, and has been a publicly held company since 1969. It is an independent oil and gas company engaged in the acquisition, exploration, development, and production of natural gas and liquids mainly in North America. The Company operates in one industry segment, oil and gas exploration and production, and has one reportable geographical business segment, the United States. Its core operational areas are in the Texas Panhandle Area, the Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas, and the East Texas / North Louisiana Area. The Company has 19 gross (13 net) wells in progress in the United States. During 2012, it drilled a total of 139 gross (77 net) wells, of which 30 were classified as exploratory and 109 were classified as development. The Company's 2012 drilling program, which primarily consisted of horizontal wells, achieved a 96% success rate. Its natural gas production is generally sold on a month-to-month basis in the spot market, priced in reference to published indices. The Company's oil production is generally sold under short-term contracts at prices based upon refinery postings or NYMEX WTI monthly averages and is typically sold at the wellhead. Its natural gas liquids production is typically sold under term agreements at prices based on postings at large fractionation facilities. The Company encounters competition in all aspects of its business, including acquisition of properties and oil and gas leases, marketing oil and gas, obtaining services and labor, and securing drilling rigs and other equipment necessary for drilling and completing wells. The Company's oil and gas operations are subject to various United States federal, state, and local laws and regulations and foreign laws and regulations.
