The Company designs, manufactures and markets railroad freight car equipment in North America and Europe, marine barges in North America and provides wheel services, railcar refurbishment and parts, leasing and other services to the railroad and related transportation industries in North America. It operates an integrated business model in North America that combines freight car manufacturing, wheel services, repair and refurbishment, component parts reconditioning, leasing and fleet management services. The Company's business segments are Manufacturing, Wheels & Parts, Leasing & Services, and GBW Joint Venture. Its products and services can be classified as Manufacturing, Wheels, Repair & Parts, and Leasing & Services. The Manufacturing segment includes North American Railcar Manufacturing, Intermodal Railcars, Tank Cars, Automotive, and Conventional Railcars, European Railcar Manufacturing, and Marine Vessel Fabrication. Wheels, Repair & Parts includes Wheel Services, Railcar Repair, Refurbishment and Component Parts Manufacturing. Leasing & Services includes Leasing and Management Services. The GBW Joint Venture operates the independent railcar repair shop network in North America consisting of 33 Repair shops including 12 tank car repair shops certified by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). This network of repair shops performs heavy railcar repair and refurbishment, as well as routine railcar maintenance for third parties, as well as for its leased and managed fleet. Its customers include railroads, leasing companies, financial institutions, shippers, carriers and transportation companies. The Company has a number of U.S. and non-U.S. patents of varying duration, and pending patent applications, registered trademarks, copyrights and trade names that are important to its products and product development efforts.
