The Company designs, manufactures and markets railroad freight car equipment in North America and Europe, marine barges in North America and provides wheel services, railcar refurbishment and parts, leasing and other services to the railroad and related transportation industries in North America. It operates an integrated business model in North America that combines freight car manufacturing, wheel services, repair and refurbishment, component parts reconditioning, leasing and fleet management services. The Company operates in three primary business segments: Manufacturing; Wheels, Repair & Parts; and Leasing & Services. Its products and services can be classified as Manufacturing, Wheels, Repair & Parts, and Leasing & Services.Manufacturing includes North American Railcar Manufacturing, Intermodal Railcars, Tank Cars, Automotive, and Conventional Railcars, European Railcar Manufacturing, and Marine Vessel Fabrication. Wheels, Repair & Parts includes Wheel Services, Railcar Repair, Refurbishment and Component Parts Manufacturing. Leasing & Services includes Leasing and Management Services. Its customers include railroads, leasing companies, financial institutions, shippers, carriers and transportation companies. Its products require a supply of materials including steel and specialty components such as brakes, wheels and axles. There are currently six railcar manufacturers competing in North America. The Company competes on the basis of quality, price, reliability of delivery, product design and innovation, reputation and customer service and support. In North America, it utilizes an integrated marketing and sales effort to coordinate relationships in its various segments. In Europe, it maintains relationships with customers through a network of country-specific sales representatives. The Company has a number of U.S. and non-U.S. patents of varying duration, and pending patent applications, registered trademarks, copyrights and trade names that are important to its products and product development efforts.
