Business Description

GateHouse Media, Inc., formerly Liberty Group Publishing, Inc. was formed in 1997 for purposes of acquiring 166 daily and weekly newspapers. GateHouse"s business model is to be the preeminent provider of local content and advertising in the small and midsize markets its serve. The Company's portfolio of products includes 515 community publications and more than 250 related websites and seven yellow page directories, serves over 233,000 business advertising accounts and reaches approximately 10 million people on a weekly basis. The Company's core products include: 101 daily newspapers, 282 weekly newspapers, 132 shoppers, generally advertising-only publications, over 250 locally focused websites and seven yellow page directories. The Company's print and online products focus on the local community from both content and advertising standpoint. GateHouse's content is mainly devoted to topics that are relevant and of interest to its audience such as local news and politics, community and regional events, youth sports, opinion and editorial pages, and local schools. In addition to its core products, the Company also opportunistically produces niche publications that address specific local market interests such as recreation, sports, healthcare and real estate. Its product mix consists of four publication types: daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, shoppers and niche publications. It provides commercial printing services to third parties on a competitive bid basis as a means. These customers consist mainly of other publishers that do not have their own printing presses and do not compete with the Company"s publications. It also prints other commercial materials, including flyers, business cards and invitations. Each of its publications competes with direct mail, yellow pages, radio, outdoor advertising, broadcast and cable television, magazines, local, regional and national newspapers, shoppers and other print and online media sources. The level of competition and competitors the Company faces vary from market to market. The Company"s operations are subject to federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the environment, storage tanks and the management and disposal of wastes at its facilities.
