Guru Investment Theses on Golar LNG, Ltd.

Baron Funds Comments on Golar LNG - May 24, 2012

From the Baron Funds' first quarter letter: We initiated a position in Golar LNG Ltd. (GLNG), which declined 11.4% during the period held. Golar is engaged in the transportation, trading, liquefaction and regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The company owns, operates and charters LNG carriers and floating storage and regasification units. While worldwide supply of LNG has increased, shipyard manufacturing of LNG vessels bottomed in the last two years, creating a supply/demand imbalance that is driving steep rate increases on available vessels. We believe that the current valuation substantially undervalues Golar's unique assets, which include a fleet of 19 vessels. (Gilad Shany)

Golar LNG, Ltd. was founded in 1946 formed on May 10, 2001 and incorporated under the laws of the Islands of Bermuda. It is a mid-stream LNG company engaged in the transportation, regasification and liquefaction of LNG. It is also engaged in the acquisition, ownership, and operation and chartering of LNG carriers and FSRUs through its subsidiaries and the development of liquefaction projects. It has a fleet of approximately 13 vessels, 10 LNG carriers, 3 FSRUs and a 50% equity interest in a further LNG carrier. It is seeking to further develop its business in other mid-stream areas of the LNG supply chain other than shipping, in particular innovative LNG solutions such as FSRUs and floating LNG production. It receives a substantial majority of its revenue from long-term charter agreements with four customers, BG, Shell, Pertamina and Petrobras. The Company's vessels transport LNG from various facilities around the world. Two of its vessels serve under long-term time charter arrangements, one serving routes between Indonesia and Taiwan, while the other is involved in the transportation of LNG from facilities in the Middle East, North Africa and Trinidad to ports in the United States and Europe but also Japan. Governmental and international agencies extensively regulate the handling and carriage of LNG. These regulations include international conventions and national, state and local laws and regulations in the countries where its vessels operate or where its vessels are registered.
