General Communication was incorporated in 1979 under the laws of the State of Alaska. The company offers facilities-based local and long-distance voice services, wireless telephone services, video services, data and Internet access to residential and business customers across the state under its GCI brand. The company's facilities include redundant and geographically diverse digital undersea fiber optic cable systems linking its Alaska terrestrial networks to the networks of other carriers in the lower 48 contiguous states. As of December 31, 2011, its cable systems passed 78% of Alaska's households, and the company has achieved 50% basic cable penetration of the homes it reaches. For the year ended December 31, 2012 the company has approximately 140,000 wireless subscribers, 128,900 cable modem subscribers, 140,000 basic video subscribers and 129,600 local access lines in service.. The company has five reportable segments are Consumer, Network Access, Commercial, Managed Broadband, and Regulated Operations. The company's reportable segments are business units that offer different products, are each managed separately, and serve distinct types of customers. The Consumer segment offers video services over its broadband cable systems. The video service offerings include basic cable, digital cable, high-definition television, digital video recorder, premium channel programming, video on demand, and pay-per-view programming. It offers four types of Internet access for consumer use: high-speed cable modem, dial-up, mobile wireless and fixed wireless. It offers mobile wireless services by selling services over its own facilities and reselling AT&T Mobility's services under the GCI brand name. The company's Network Access segment offers wholesale voice and data services and products to other common carrier customers. It provides network transport, billing services and access to its network to other common carriers. It is engaged in the transmission of interstate and intrastate-switched message telephone service, Internet service, and data network communications service between the major communities in Alaska, and the remaining United States and foreign countries. Its message toll services include intrastate, interstate and international direct dial, toll-free services, calling card, operator and enhanced conference calling services It offers full featured local access service to its Commercial segment customers using its own fiber facilities and collocated remote facilities that access the ILEC's UNE loops. It currently offers several Internet service packages for commercial use: dial-up access, DSL, passive optical networking, fixed wireless, T-1 and fractional T-1 leased line, metro Ethernet; multi-megabit and high-speed cable modem Internet access.
