Green Plains Renewable Energy, Inc. is an Iowa corporation founded in June 2004. It engages in the production, marketing, and distribution of ethanol. It currently have an ethanol production capacity of approximately 740 million gallons per year with its 9 plants located in Bluffton, Indiana; Central City, Nebraska; Fergus Falls, Minnesota; Lakota, Iowa; Obion, Tennessee; Ord, Nebraska; Riga, Michigan; Shenandoah, Iowa; and Superior, Iowa. The company also operates an independent third party ethanol marketing business, Green Plains Trade, for which it has 260 million gallons of annual production under contract. It acquired a biofuel terminal operator BlendStar. The company is part of a joint venture called BioProcess Algae to commercialize algae production technology. In addition to Green Plains, the other partners in the venture are CLARCOR Inc. and BioProcess H2O. The company has four separate operating segments: Ethanol Production, Corn Oil Production, Agribusiness and Marketing and Distribution. In Ethanol Production it operates a total of nine ethanol plants with approximately 740 million gallons per year of total ethanol production capacity. At capacity, these plants collectively will consume approximately 265 million bushels of corn and produce approximately 2.1 million tons of distiller's grains annually. In Corn Oil Production the company operate corn oil extraction systems at all nine of its ethanol plants, with the capacity to produce approximately 130 million pounds annually. In Agribusiness it operate three lines of business within its agribusiness segment: bulk grain, agronomy and petroleum and in Marketing and Distribution its in-house marketing business is responsible for the sales, marketing and distribution of all ethanol, distillers grains and corn oil produced at its nine ethanol plants.
