Guangshen Railway Company, Ltd., was established as a joint stock limited company under the Company Law of the PRC on March 6, 1996. The Company's principal businesses are railroad passenger and freight transportation and railway network usage and services. Its passenger train services can be categorized as intercity high-speed express trains between Guangzhou and Shenzhen; Hong Kong Through Trains between Hong Kong and Guangzhou; and domestic long-distance trains. The majority of the freight it transports is high-volume, medium to long-distance freight received from and/or transferred to other rail lines. A portion of the freight it transports both originates and terminates in the Shenzhen-Guangzhou-Pingshi corridor. It classifies its freight business into three categories: inbound freight, which is freight unloaded at freight stations and spur lines connected to ports on its rail line or in Hong Kong; outbound freight, which is freight bound for other regions in Mainland China as well as foreign countries loaded at its train stations and spur lines connected to ports on its rail line or in Hong Kong; and pass-through freight, which refers to freight that travels on its rail line, but which does not originate from or terminate at its rail line. It transports a broad range of goods, which can be classified as metal ores, coal, containers, construction materials, steel, petroleum, and other goods. Its inbound freight consists of raw materials and essential production materials for manufacturing, industrial and construction activities, while the majority of its outbound freight consists of imported mineral ores as well as coal and goods produced or processed within its service territory, for customers throughout China and abroad. Its other businesses consist of sale of materials and supplies, maintenance and repair of trains, on-board catering services, labour services, operation of restaurants, hotels and warehouses, and other businesses related to railway transportation. As a joint stock limited company with publicly traded shares, it is subject to regulation by the PRC securities regulatory authorities with respect to its compliance with PRC securities laws and regulations.
