The Company along with its subsidiaries designs, develops, manufactures and sells precision photonic and motion control components and subsystems to original equipment manufacturers in the medical, industrial, electronics and scientific markets. Its engineered technologies include laser sources, scanning and beam delivery products, medical visualization and informatics solutions, and precision motion control products. It operates in three segments: Laser Products, Medical Technologies and Precision Motion. The Laser Products segment includes Laser Scanners, Sealed CO2 Lasers, Fiber Lasers and Scientific Lasers product lines. The Laser Products segment designs, manufactures and markets photonics-based solutions to customers. It serves photonics-based applications such as industrial material processing, medical and life science imaging, and laser treatments. Its products are sold to original equipment manufacturer customers. It sells these products both directly, through sales force, and indirectly through resellers and distributors. The Medical Technologies segment designs, manufactures and markets medical grade technologies, including visualization solutions, imaging informatics products, thermal printers, and light and color measurement instrumentation to customers. Its product offerings are sold to original equipment manufacturer customers. It sells these products both directly, utilizing sales force, and indirectly, through resellers and distributors. It consists of four product lines: Visualization Solutions, Imaging Informatics, Thermal Printers, Light and Color Measurement. The Precision Motion segment consists of two product lines: Optical Encoders and Air Bearing Spindles. It designs, manufactures and markets optical encoders and air bearing spindles to customers. Its product offerings are sold to OEM customers. It sells these products both directly, through sales force, and indirectly, through resellers and distributors. The Company's customers are from medical, industrial, electronics and scientific markets. Products offered by Laser Products segment is manufactured at facilities in Bedford, Massachusetts; Mukilteo, Washington; Rugby and Taunton, United Kingdom; Santa Clara, California; and Suzhou, China. Products offered by Medical Technologies segment is manufactured at facilities in Bedford, Massachusetts; San Jose and Chatsworth, California, and Suzhou, China. Products offered by Precision Motion segment is manufactured at facilities in Bedford, Massachusetts; Poole, United Kingdom; and Suzhou, China. The Company acquires its raw material from domestic and foreign sources. It relies on independent contractors to manufacture subassemblies for few of its products. Further, it designs and/or re-engineers the parts and components used in its products.
