Great Plains Energy Inc is a public utility holding company. The Company operates in only one segment, known as electric utility segment. It provides electricity to customers in the states of Missouri and Kansas.

Great Plains Energy Inc was incorporated in 2001. The Company is a public utility holding company. The Company operates in electric utility segment with its holding subsidiaries: KCP&L, Greater Missouri Operations Company (GMO) and GPE Transmission Holding Company, LLC. The KCP&L is an integrated, regulated electric utility that provides electricity to customers primarily in the states of Missouri and Kansas. GMO is an integrated, regulated electric utility that provides electricity to customers in the state of Missouri. GPE Transmission Holding Company, LLC (GPETHC) owns 13.5% of Transource Energy, LLC (Transource) with the remaining 86.5% owned by AEP Transmission Holding Company, LLC (AEPTHC), a subsidiary of American Electric Power Company, Inc. KCP&L and GMO are also subject to regulation by The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) with respect to transmission, wholesale sales and rates, and other matters, the Southwest Power Pool, Inc. (SPP) and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC).
